War in Despotism, peace in Republic.

But we can't afford to switch goverments everytime we want to goto war - we have to pick a goverment and stay with it for a long time.

Also, we will have a large standing army and we'll need to pay for it when at peace in Republic. I say Monarchy is the best option for us, as it allows decent tile work and has decent unit support.

The only benefit to remaining in Despotism over Monarchy would be the greater Free Unit Support - this is countered by Monarchy's better tile work, military police limit and economy.

The only advantage Replubic has over Monarchy is a stronger economy, but as it is useless for a PBEM war becuase it is all spent on unit upkeep (2 gold per unit, and only 1 free unit per city until size 7!) and possibly the lux slider if the other teams cause us a lot of WW.

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Republic has my vote.

We must get at least 2 cities to size 7, which won't be too hard to do with Granaries.

The real issue for me is whether we go to war and generate our GA while still in Despotism. I'm not sure that we really have a choice. In which case, wage war under Despotism and switch to Republic later.

I haven't looked at the governments in detail vis a vis our situation, but it seems Rep would be painful for a bit. I'm not saying that's any reason not to choose it, since the other governments are painful for much longer, just pointing it out. One thing I will say is that even a despotic GA beats the hell out of an anarchic GA, so holding off a switch would definitely be in order, IMO.

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

currently republic would give us 3 units for free, and charge us 16 GPT for the rest of our army, we would have no military police either so we'd need 10% of the slider on Lux, or use entertainers. To generate 16 GPT, we'd have to put the science slider to about 50% (maths would take 19 turns) This takes into account replublic trade bonus.

This will of course change if we build any more unit, our granaries and barrack will cost 3 GPT, and any extra warriors will cost 2 GPT. How will we afford an army under republic? we'll need a large army to attack one of the other civs, all cities churning out units. I ask again - how will the republic fund this war? Republic's unit support doesn't get much better over size6. It allows for one garrison unit, and one extra unit - that's still not very good..

Compare to monarchy.

we'd get 6 units for free, and pay 5 gold for the rest. We'd have no need of the Lux slider. We coud keep the science slider on 100%, or possibly 90. Maths in 9 turns or 10 turns.

Republic sucks if you want to have a large army. You are better in Monarchy.

I see that we appear to have done tech deals / alliances for Replublic, I assume this means we have decided that's the route we are going down. I still oppose the choice.. Monarchy is the better goverment for the nature of this game!!
