Can fighters defend against missiles? Inflate your Upload Space

If I have a fighter on an aircraft carrier, will it defend against missiles?

answer is, No.

Anyone played 2194 Days of War that has a good defense against the V-2 /Kamikazee's? They are way to strong IMO, and make the late game attack difficult

You could look in the rules.txt file and see if there are any units with the AEGIS tag. It has Good defense against missiles and could be effective.

Surround your fleet with some AEGIS style ships for protection.

They key to defending a stack of naval vessels is that in CIV "Fighters can only be attacked by other fighters". A missile cannot attack a fighter when the fighter is in the air.

If the naval convoy is surrounded on all sides by fighters, the formation can be attacked only by fighters. If you stack each protective fighter with an Aegis cruiser, you have a virtually impregnable invasion convoy that consists of transports carrying ground units, one or two carriers with enough fighters to keep up a continuous fighter shield and, optionally, a few extra Aegis cruisers to replace any that are damaged in order not to slow down the convoy.

The Aegis cruisers are necessary to absorb any fighter attacks on the fighter+Aegis stacks that screen the convoy.

As I recall, it was a lot of fun to watch the Kamikazes fall into the ocean (out of fuel) when they tried to attack but nothing happened.

Fighter defense of convoy Inflate your Upload Space

I like this idea, but am not sure how to do it.

Fighters can't end their turns in the air, like bombers.
So a fighter would take off from a carrier, fly around
a bit, and have to land on the carrier again
by the end of the turn, to avoid running out of fuel.

Next comes the AI turn. It moves its missle
towards the convoy, but there are no fighters
in the air -- they all had to land. What would stop
the missile from hitting the carriers or transports?

Sorry, my mistake. You are right. Thanks for the heads up.

The post should have read as follows:

They key to defending a stack of naval vessels is that in vanilla CIV "A stack containing any aircraft can only be attacked by fighters". A missile cannot attack an aircraft that is airborne.

If the naval convoy is surrounded on all sides by aircraft, the formation can be attacked only by fighters. If you stack each protective aircraft with an Aegis cruiser, you have a virtually impregnable invasion convoy that consists of transports carrying ground units, one or two carriers with enough aircraft to keep up a continuous shield and, optionally, a few extra Aegis cruisers to replace any that are damaged in order not to slow down the convoy.

The Aegis cruisers are necessary to absorb any fighter attacks on the aircraft+Aegis stacks that screen the convoy.

As I recall, it was a lot of fun to watch the Kamikazes fall into the ocean (out of fuel) when they tried to attack but nothing happened.

Using this method with vanilla CIV requires suspending disbelief in carrier based bombers. Scens are a bit easier to swallow because many have 2 turn fighters, dive bombers and torpedo bombers.

Have a safe convoy.

Ahhh.... this makes sense. For vanilla Civ2,
one must use bombers for this role.

The invasion convoy might include bombers anyway,
to provide air cover during the invasion and
immediately after, to ward off the AI counterattack.

Rather than have the bombers simply cool their heels
in the officers club while en route, keep them flying!
Ensure that some are ending their turn stacked
on top of the AEGIS cruiser escorts, while last turn's
air cover lands on the carriers to refuel.

By flying lots of sorties, the AI cruise missiles will
have nothing to attack. Once the convoy is close
to the enemies' coast, the AI could use land-based
fighters (if it has any) to attack the air cover.
This vulnerability is probably only one or two turns

But the fleet would have arrived undamaged,
which was the original goal.

Put an end to popups!

You got it. Fighters don't do very well against vet Aegis cruisers. Also. the AI is too dumb to concentrate all its fighter attacks against one of the defensive stacks.
