Two Barrow schoolteachers are in jail on felony drug charges after police say they found methamphetamines and supplies to package the drug in the couple's home.
Terry E. Eckard, 33, and his wife, Jani A. Eckard, 32, are charged with second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance, according to the North Slope Borough Police Department, which arrested them Wednesday.
Terry Eckard was a teacher at the high school in Barrow, his wife at the elementary school there, Barrow police Lt. Kelly Alzaharna said. Both face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Barrow police and troopers executed a search warrant Wednesday at the Eckards' home on Momegana Street. There, they said, they found 7.8 grams of meth and $5,300 in cash, as well as scales and supplies to package the drug.
Also arrested at the residence was Thomas J. Stibbs, 34, who police said was in possession of 1.2 grams of meth and the drug Ecstasy. Stibbs is charged with fourth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance.
Alzaharna would not say what led to the arrests, because the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected. The warrants were the result of a three-month investigation into meth trafficking, police said.
Meth has been a growing problem in Barrow, according to Alzaharna, who said her department has gotten at least 10 phone calls since Wednesday thanking them for cracking down on the problem.
"For Anchorage that probably isn't big, but for Barrow that's a good chunk," she said of the community's response. |

Eckard was one of the biggest influences on myself and my closests friends while we were in school, we all looked up to him. He was one of the few teachers who actually had time for you if you needed something. Im just at a loss for words beyond that.

No, its a good thing they caught him. Meth destroys people, and the labs are notoriously unstable.

Space - that's why addiction is always sad. People do bad things and become the addiction. He is probably feeling very alone and isolated right now, with his career in the sh*tter and possibly sitting in a jail cell. The best thing you can do for him is write him a letter, the genuine hand written kind, and thank him for everything, and tell him what a difference he made for you. You might even write the judge/prosecuting attorney for his case - lawyer types here could tell you the better way to proceed on that.

Most sellers/distributors get involved to pay for their habit. As I said, they become the addiction and do things that they normally would never consider.
