Exactly, its ridiculous to not blame him for not reigning in the military, he wasn't THAT powerless.

Yea, my uncle drove one across Remagen bridge in 1945 during the battle there. It was his third tank of the war, his first two were Shermans and were destroyed. IIRC only about 20 Pershings were delivered in time to take part in significant combat operations, 10 to the First Army and 10 to the Third Army.

cant agree with that the british and the US had a totally different approach to tank building then the germans or the russians....yes one on one the german tank won (certainly if the allied tank still had a to small of a gun which was a big mistake) but the sherman tank was perfect because the could build a lot very fast (bigger tank takes more time) and it was fast...i believe most allied tanks werent build to take on enemy tanks they had special tanks for that..the m-18 and so on...the allied tank of WWII wasnt a main-battle tank because they didnt want one

I agree with much of what you say, I just think it was shortsighted to develop a tank to match rather than exceed the current enemy design. It assures you that at best you'll have parity, but in all likelihood your design will be inferior. Had the allies adopted the same methods with aircraft, shipping, artillery etc. the war might well have gone a lot worse than it did.

Now, you can say the Navy and air force could have achieved this without the Philippines and there is some truth in that too but this was not known at the time. Thats what I mean by hindsight.

It was not known at the time, except Admiral Nimitz somehow DID know it at the time.

The Philippines were also going to be the major base for invasion operations against Japan and elsewhere. You couldn't base a fullscale invasion of Japan out of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. There's a reason why the US hung onto Clarke Field and Subic Bay for so long after the war, they were very high value strategic assets.

1. FDR was under heavy pressure from pro-MacArthur Republican pols.

2. Under the Navy plan, Taiwan was to have been the base for the invasion of Japan.

The winter clothes things is a bit of a myth - the German army had the winter clothes - the problem was they decided to move ammunition forward rather than clothing in October 41 - so they could launch Operation Typhoon

Guderian in "Panzer General" says they did NOT have winter clothes. Then again, he may have his reasons for not telling the truth.

The difference was that Guderian was in Russia while the clothing was in Germany.
