Ethiopia is challanging without being suicidal. You basically know nothing on the map except Nubia, Egypt, and a few empty proviences in the horn of Afria filled with angry natives. I normally ally with Nubia, captured Egypt's maps, then start colonizing. Once that colonizing is done and Sudan is annex you have a small but healthy economy and no one can seriously attack you.

You can't maintain much of an army but you can eventually capture Alexandra and that east african CoT (I'm blanking on its name right now) plus you can fight your way down the coast through Zanj to Zimbabwe. It's hard to mke it through the 30 years of nationalism but if you do then its gold city and your money troubles are over.

A nob could play Portugal. Decent leaders and events with no real worries as long as you keep Spain happy. A newbie could just sit and concentrate on exploring.

I'm using 1.08 and the gold inflation was never more than about 0.15% per year. By 1619 I had expanded enough to get rid of it completely and, even after spells of minting, a few "exceptional year" events have brought my inflation down to around 9%.

My one WC attempt involved loan sharking and bankruptcies every five years or so. That meant five digit inflation rates but truly a massive empire.

I've never even tried to do a WC. I play for fun, and a WC is not fun, so much have I understood from the descriptions. Besides, as I've said before, I am and have always been a mediocre player.

The EU2 players on the paradox forums are hardcore.

I once tried to do a WC with Ottoman empire while trying to keep my BB under the threshold and I barely managed 1/4 of the map.

The Paradox OT is a scary place full of unfriendly people. It seems Paradox games attact an extremely right wing crowd, though I also see a heck of a lot of commies, too.
