EU2: What is a good country for a noob? Remove this text

I FINNALLY got EU2! Now I just need to know what contries are good to learn the game with. I was thinking of England, but they are still in the 100 years war, and I want several years to get a hang on my economics before I start conquering. Maybe i'll try Sweden.

BTW, I have the AGC-EEP mod.

If you want to focus on colonization, choose Spain in the 1492 scenario. But the probably easiest country is France 1492. Then you will face more of the sides of the game too.

Well, heīs playing AGC-EEP, so no France yet...

Iīd advise to play the standard game without mods at highest patch for a start. While the AGC-EEP is great, youīll have a better time getting the hang of things in the vanilla EU2. Itīs also more stable than the mod...

Play as Castille in 1419, then you have little war till later on and can go all the way up to Spain with lots of explorers and the like. Donīt play Portugal or Ottoman Empire at first, since youīll run out of money pretty soon with those.

Austria is also great for learning, though itīs not present in AGC-EEP (and I didnīt manage to create it there)...

You may want to focus on certain aspects of the game first with specific countries. Such as, choosing a landlocked country will allow you to ignore the exploration, colonization, and naval elements while learning about land wars, trade, and diplomacy. Then, maybe play Portugal. With Portugal, you're almosy always going to be able to go naval unencumbeed by European matters. You can learn about exploration, colonization, and naval combat (techs) with them.

My first country I played was Denmark.
Little, so you don't have lots to do right from the start without knowing what's all going on.
But rich, so you won't lose right away if you make some less bright decisions.

If colonization is to complicated for a first timer then Austria is a good choice as it gets lots of favorable events and is far from any of the other majors. Turkey is the only one to ever really give Austria trouble but as long as Austria gets into Germany and Italy early it should have plenty of money for armies. Poland implodes on its ownand being in the latin tech group means you're usually a CRT or two ahead of the Turk.

Poland/lithuania can be a power house early on, and france and spain will often get into conflicts with austria later.

Poland loses western tech group and moves to Orthodoxed tech group when it annexes Lithuania. That alone is a big blow to a newbie combine in the fact that most proviences won't be your culture or your religion and you see why a total newbie shouldn't play Poland-Lithuania.

I'm gonna go against the herd on this one and recommend playing Muscowy for a "noob."

True, they are in a "weaker" tech group AND near other nations that are in a "stronger" tech group, BUT....

* You will learn the mechanics of combat....vital if you are gonna be a long-time EU player.

* You will learn ALLLLL about "General Winter," when to execute sieges, when to run away and wait for spring, etc.

* Blessed with abundant leaders

* Colonization options, both in the early game (Kola, Karelia, Arkangel, and any of the other colonies you can snag from Scandinavia), and again later, after you fight your way to the eastern corridor.

* The endless Russian Hordes mean that you can afford to make mistakes and still recover easily from them (it's nice to be playing a country where you can lose your entire army, take a loan and INSTANTLY be bristling with troops again, recruiting from Moscow alone!)

* Good events....(watch out for Russia's "Time of Troubles" cos it WILL hurt some, but by that time, you should be more than strong enough to handle it).

If you opt to play Muscowy, cancel your Vassalization with the Golden Horde right away, then focus on absorbing your neighbors first (don't take the colonies as territorial gains from war, let Novgorod settle those areas for you)...but rather, take established territories first to build a strong base, and then lay the smack down on anybody who gets uppity. If Sweden comes calling, remember two things: 1) They don't have NEARLY the manpower you do, and 2) General Winter will do most of the hard work for you. That, coupled with your excellent leadership should be more than enough to offset the tech advantage they will have. And don't give yourself a border with the Ottomans till you are strong and prepared. As for the rest of your neighbors....they've got NOTHING for you....they're just cushion and free land.

Does Russia still get Mongol culture in an event or did they take that away when they took Baltic culture away from Sweden? Also if forming Russia is the goal then start as Novgorod because that way when you form Russia you will get both Russian and Ugric culture plus it's nice to start out with a CoT.

True, true...but for a "noob" starting as Nov is a pain in the Arse....you got quite possibly the crappiest army on the planet, which seems to have great difficulty fighting its way out of a paper sack, and Muscowy has better leaders. Plus, on any but the easiest difficulty settings, you're gonna get jumped by just about all of your neighbors on or before Feb 1, 1419, which will put you in a 4-5 front tooth-and-nail war for survival.

If I was a noob, and THAT was my opening situation, I'd run very far and very fast from this demon game!

IIRC, yes, The Rus still get Mongol culture, but admittedly, it's been a while since I gave them a spin, and my last game was as Nov...cos you're right...that CoT offers some sweet advantages (as does jumping Sweden and stealing Lappland, Finmark, and Narvik, Iceland and both Greenland provs) when Denmark and Norway come to the rescue of Sweden in an attempt to stop the Russian Tide....

Yeah. But it's only in the Chinese home provinces I think. Which is quite a bit anyway. I have only played China once, as my first EU2 game(I had EU1 before though, so I wasn't completely lost), and my flaw was to 1)not know of the event, 2)don't have the country ready stability wise(fast regainment is a good thing, which I didn't have...) and 3)I didn't have enough non-Chinese land. The last one would have been crucial. I actually managed to play through the whole GC, though it was hard.

Yes, come the 1620's you get a series of events as the Ming dynasty collapses, the army revolts, you have religious cults popping up, essentially the whole thing breaks down, and obviously you also have weak leaders.

The thing I disliked about that, besides the horrible pain of seing half the huge country in the hand of rebels and being utterly unable to raise new armies even aas I have to fight to regain my own damn empire is that, of course these events are preset, even though China was the most advanced state in the world with a signiifcant colonial empire in the East Indies. Why would the ruling dynasty of the greatest power in the world just suddenyl collapse?

There is one final even where China and the Manchu united under Manchu rule- half the time as China, from what i read in the Paradox Forums, you lose your northern half of the country and then have to regain it. Myself, I remained in control and got Manchuria. There was a revolt there soon and a few provinces broke away yet again, but at the point I became one united empire, I got about 120,000 Manchu soldiers, so I was finally able to crush my rebels in the south.

That's my big problem with China is that it has weak leaders and with the east Asian tech costs so high leaders become your main way of winning battles. I normally take the full naval approach to the Chinese explorer event they get in the 1430s just so I can switch to the better muslim tech group (still far behind the two Christian tech groups but not as bad as before) though that means I have to spend the next 100 years trying to fix my sliders.

At the end of my Chinese game, I was nearly as advanced as the European powers. Full innovativeness, centralization, free citizens and plutocracy help having plenty of money, which happily went to my science.

I even had the most advanced naval tech in the world (I had rushed for it a little bit, in order to have all my ships able to explore: I didn't start having random explorers before that )

By the end of my first complete China game I was the most advanced state, with infra and trade at tech 10, and with land at tech 49, and Sea at 40 something (the final ship graphic). I had a colonial empire encompassing the philipinnes, 90% of the East Indies, Bombay and southern India, parts of the East African Coast, Angola (which I took from the Portugese), Louisiana, Monterrey in california, and I conquered the still independent Aztec Empire, so I had Central Mexico....

Of course, this happens, as Oerdin said, by choosing to open to the world in the early part of the GC.

Go for the Aztec, Maya, or Inca if you can since that's where the gold is. Failing that hen the east coast is best since there is a CoT you can convert, several rich proviences, and tons of natives to convert. You want to convert them because then they change to your culture.

I was looking for an interesting non-european country having got the major european colonial powers (England, France, Spain, Portugal) to the point they were too easy on VH/furious. I tried several with mixed results.

Zimbabwe - not too bad. Isolated, pagan and gold inflation. I ended up with a sunni religion regional power controlling a fair bit of east africa. Not easy for a noob though.

Brunei - easy to colonise locally. You can FA Makassar to gain a province early on but it would take a long time to build up to the point where you can take on the mainland countries.

Inca - not recommended. Possibly the most isolated country in the game. Easy enough to take over the Chimu but then what? Build tax collectors, disband the army and wait for a random conquistador or the Spanish to arrive (neither of which can happen before 1500 at the earliest).

Morocco - not easy. I was using a beta with a straits crossing at Gibraltar. Taking over Fez gave me a border with Castile and they just kept declaring war and outnumbered me 8 to 1.

Finally I struck gold with Songhai. Inland west africa. Sunni with a bit of gold inflation. Looks tricky to start as Timbuktu is rebel controlled and a rebel army is marching on you and you have no troops. Appearances can be deceptive though

Pagans to annex - Ashanti, Dahomey, Benin (and the Ivoria CoT) and eventually Kongo. Mali is Sunni but is your culture. Random conquistadors let you explore the coastal provinces. Plenty of room to colonise. Not isolated as you can easily trade maps with Morocco and then other Sunni countries to get Europe and as far east as the East Indies.

Early monarchs aren't bad and there are a few leaders to take the pagans. Conversion chances usually over 50%.

I've reached 1680 and have over 30 provinces and tech 17/11/5/6. If there is a downside it is that I have nowhere left to colonise and my only land neighbours are England, Portugal and the Ottomans. I can't get anywhere by sea. I have just forcibly extracted a couple of provinces from the Ottomans and Portugal is next once I have land 18.

Definitely worth a look for a first try at a smaller muslim/pagan type country.

Tired of ads?

Songhai was my first experience (with 1.00), and I found it fairly easy, save for the inflation which was a real killer (about .60 inflation at the beginning - I believe gold inflation has been halved in further patches).

In the 1600's, I ended up with a 300% inflation or something. The game is significantly harder when everything costs 4 times the price
