Although I initially hated the way Bungie had set up Halo 2's multiplayer, I have now come to prefer it.
Scenario 1: Halo 2 on Xbox Live
I want to play a 4v4 team game. I pick Team Skirmish in matchmaking, wait approximately 30-45 seconds, and am soon playing a game of 4 on 4 Capture the Flag.
Scenario I: Ghost Recon 2/DOOM3/etc/any PC game I ever played
I want to play a team game. I select the appropriate option, and wait while a server list is brought up. I get to scroll through the list and find a host who is playing the map/game type I like; however, I must try to find one that hasn't started yet, and since the list almost instantly becomes outdated, this can prove troublesome. Sometimes when I do manage to get in a game, it is one in which the host is planning on leaving. In many instances, I have to start all over, which means I could have to wait up to 10 minutes before I get into a game I want.
I think not being able to know the exact map or gametype beforehand is a small trade off for being guaranteed a game which will start with minimal delay (not having to wait for a game to end before I can join, or having to deal with joining a server where the host or players are about to leave).
