Saul Bellow dead at 89 Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

Nobel prize winning novelist Saul Bellow is dead.

He was a great one of American letters, and was someone who through his art, transformed the experiences of American Jewish immigrants and children of immigrants into lessons on the universal human condition.

Ive read Herzog, Humboldts Gift, More Die of Heartbreak (which i particularly liked) and several short stories/novellas (Him with his Foot in his Mouth, IIRC)

I've read 'Seize the Day' 'Dangling Man' and 'To Jerusalem and Back' and 'Mr. Sammler's Planet'.

Although I thought he was a good writer, I didn't like his work that much- I prefer Roth or Richler, Parker and Perelman...

I started To Jerusalem and Back, and didnt make it very far - he was a better novelist than political writer, despite his interests in larger social and political issues, I think. Seize and Dangling Man were early efforts. Ive never read Mr. Sammlers Planet.

I really recommend "More Die of Heartbreak" very highly - youve got Chicago politics, botany, pre-WW1 Russian neo-Hegelian thought, and two perverse love stories. All wound together in a novel with driving force and brilliant language.

I look forward to your screenplay for the Hallmark Movie of the Week version.... pity Michael Landon's dead and can't star in it.

Anyway: Saul Bellow: respect.
