	Computer Problem Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

Hmm... I'm having a computer problem. Programs that use the internet (World of Warcraft, MSN) are not working, yet the Internet itself is working. All of a sudden, I just couldn't get on the programs. All my applications are running slowly as well. I think it's something to do with me downloading a trial of McAfee Privacy Service, and McAfee Personal Firewall Plus last night, but when I shut them off, the problem was still there.

there you go, you figured it out. Could be possible, that since you installed the firewall, it might have disabled all connections for programs by default, and if you haven't configured the firewall to enable those programs and ports and what not, then .. that's what you want to do.

That would certainly explain specific programs not opening like msn and WoW but web browsers that use ports that are probably open by default are ok.

However, you said you disabled them ... perhaps it enabled the WinXP default firewall as well?

Yeah you never know, installing virus AND firewall, plus the possibility of XP firewalls, with SP2 anyway there can be hassles, plus if you have some kind of ISP provided firewall.. basically you just need to sort this crap out. But that should be the problem, or at least one of them. Also, the programs that are not using internet might be considerably slower for a while, if you just installed the virus software, it might be scanning your system. Then again I would assume you would know it, because there would be the scanning program notifying you of it so..

No you should definitely not use SP2, even though Asher is prolly going to tell us why what I just suggested is stupid and could cause your computer to explode and not be valid for insurances. But hey... take a ****ing chance once in your life and don't do what you're supposed to. SP2 = useless.

There is no reason not to use SP2, unless you're a large corporation with internal programs that will be broken by the more secure design.

More importantly, there is no reason to use SP2. It's not giving me anything I don't already have.

Err...yes, it does.

SP2 re-implements the RPC interface (the most blatantly insecure feature of WinXP, and one that the big worms used to exploit), and it also adds some additional security in the inclusion of DEP...which helps prevent many types of common exploits.

Not to mention the thousands of non-security related bugfixes and stability improvements...

SP2 is far more than Windows XP with a new IE and new Firewall and all old security patches.

You'd be stupid not to use it, given it's free and a massive security upgrade for Windows (whether you use its firewall and IE or not)...

I have SP2. I restarted the Firewall program a few times, and it finally allows me to go on MSN, Yahoo! etc. but I still can't log into WoW. And the port they use doesn't even show up.

LN, i have no other ideas, other than specifically telling the xp firewall about your WoW, or perhaps reactivating the mcaffee stuff and telling them all about your programs... i dislike relying on firewalls for this specific reason (for my home computer, not at work ), they're more trouble over the course of a month than reinstalling my whole gaming system several times would be Practice good password policy and have a couple of good virus/spyware/etc. programs on your machine, back up anything important often, and you're fine, on a home, gaming purposed machine.

Is it an application level (e.g Zone Alarm) or packet level firewall? The former enables/disables individual programs while the latter blocks/open ports etc.

If the former check to see if your WoW program is blocked access.

Yes, I am now able to access the internet, and Instant Message clients such as AIM, and MSN. And nothing is wrong on Blizzard's side.

I thought you meant WoW. But as for the Firewall, WoW doesn't work regardless if the firewall is on or off. What happens is I log on, it's successful, and it just stops on "Connecting to Server," and then later says, "Disconnected from Server."

Very strange things can happen under Windows. Try deinstalling the firewall and the privacy service completely from your box.

The "very strange thing" UR is talking about is a common security feature in modern software firewalls -- it will "lock down" your system (close all but a small number of default ports) to the internet when it's closed. Uninstalling should work.

Only under Windows where developers think they know better than the user. If a program is disabled, it should be disabled.

Windows is very strange. I just turned the Firewall on again, checked to see if WoW was allowed with full access, it was, loaded up WoW, and it works.

While I'm sure everyone cares what an IT monkey in China thinks about this, security experts disagree with you.

Why do you assume the user disables the firewall, and not a malicious program?

You still have a lot to learn about security, it seems. I'm still waiting for you to continue denying the fact that "heap vulnerabilities" exist. That was classic.
