Actually using a Mac doesn't block you from using IRC. Why should it? Not like the world's worst disability to use a Mac... 
There's several good IRC clients for Mac. Ircle is the most popular one, being 30-day shareware. MacOS X users might want to check out the free Open Source alternative X-Chat Aqua. MacOS 8/9 users are most likely better off with ShadowIRC, a yet another free Open Source client for Macs.
If any Mac user needs help with getting connected to CivIRC, our Helpdesk is always available for help.  We don't have any Mac users around, but we'll still try to make an effort to help with your client issues. Helping new users to use IRC is a main priority for us, so you won't be left without a help.
And one doesn't have to frequent all the time. Drop by now and then, if you want.
