Dawn of the Dead (2004). Certainly qualifies for a horror. One of the best remakes I've ever seen (though not necessarily for the scare factor.)

Horror isn't really my forte, but some of the best I've seen include:

Jaws
The Exorcist
The Shining
Halloween
Poltergeist
Anything with Christopher Walken

Ringu is one of the scariest films I watched. Ever! You feel uncomfortable from the first frame, and then it slowly develops to heart-stopping terror.

Dark Water is another movie by the same director. Almost as scary as Ringu.

But for gods sake see the japanese originals, the american remakes sucks

Another movie that stayed with me for quite a long time afterwards was The Sixth Sense. Alltough not a horror movie as such, itīs really creepy in certain scenes. Plus itīs a damn good movie!

Does 'horror' include ghost stories ?

Because there's an excellent black and white film with Dana Andrews called 'Night of the Demon' which is based on the British writer M.R. James's ghost story, 'Casting the Runes'.

Andrews plays a sceptical American psychiatrist/psychologist who is forced to believe in the supernatural when he becomes enmeshed in the investigation into the mysterious death of one of his British colleagues who has been investigating a cult leader, Karswell. It's steeped in atmosphere, and even gets a mention in the opening song of 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'.

I'd also recommend the film of Dennis Wheatley's novel 'The Devil Rides Out' which features Christopher Lee and Charles Gray, and two Hammer Horror films- 'The Reptile' and 'Plague of the Zombies', which is set in Cornwall. It has an excellent dream sequence as does another film called 'Razorback' about giant feral hogs in Australia's Outback.

George Romero's 'The Crazies' also springs to mind, as does 'Witchfinder General' starring Vincent Price. Oh, and also 'The Haunted Palace' and 'The Shuttered Room'.

Japanese ones I'd mention are 'Kwaidan' and 'Onibaba: Killer of Women'- superb cinematography and evocation of creeping atmosphere.

I liked the Dutch film 'Amsterdamned' and also Verhoeven's 'The Fourth Man' starring Jeroen Krabbe- and the original Danish version of 'Nightwatch'.

There's also another black and white film based on Fritz Leiber's tale 'Conjure Wife' about witchcraft in a college faculty- it stars a young Peter Wyngarde.

And there's an excellent comedy about witchcraft starring the luscious Kim Novak, called 'Bell Book and Candle'.

Happy hunting & watching.

I loved The Village - though everyone I speak to seems to hate it. I spent over an hour trying to explain it a couple of people in rl once....total waste of time.

Wouldn't say it was particularly scary by any means...and probably not a 'horror' as such - but a pretty good film imho, quite unique.

Yes, yes I can. I personally found them scary. There are undoubted humorous parts, but overall I thought they were horror rather than comedy.

There you go, serious and deliberately thick in the space of 24 hours; god I love it here

Didn't say it was any good.. but I thought a general pre-requisite for horror movies was that they're "so bad they're good again" kinda quality. Anyway, you can get creeped out by crap movies as much as much as good movies, and this did the job for me Any of the other mentioned mostly just bore me really. I am not really one for jump-style horror, I can see most of that coming a mile off.

See the American version of "The Ring" over "Ringu." The original Japanese version is kinda dull. The American version is superior, though not flawless.

I'm a fan of haunted house movies, myself:

"The Haunting" from 1963. Very scary--I kept the lights on after seeing this one. Not to be confused with the crap remake from 1998 with Liam Neeson.

"The Innocents." I think from the late 1950s. Based on Henry James's "A Turn of the Screw."

"The Woman in Black" - this is a made-for-TV British film from the late 70s (I think). It's actually pretty terrifying, especially the last scene.

"The Changeling" - Another 70s flick with George C. Scott. It's a pretty spooky haunted house tale, but the ending is a bit of a letdown.

"Ghost Story" - This is from the early 80s I think. 4 old guys terrorized by a ghost from their past. Very effective.

1 & 3 I did not find very scary. In fact, the ending of "Rosemary's Baby" made me laugh--it seemed quite silly.

"Suspiria" just seemed a rehash of a lot of horror tropes that had already been covered by American flicks.

Now, "Nightmare" was indeed scary. I haven't watched it since I was a kid, though. I avoided all the sequels like the plague as I just didn't want to deal with Freddy.
