So, why did ebay get away with trademark infringement, anyway? Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

For the first year or so that I knew of ebay's existence (1999ish?) I assumed that it was a subsidiary of the Hudson's Bay Company.

The similarity between the names (HBC is known in Canada as "the Bay") and the colour schemes (remarkably similar shades of green, yellow, blue and red) are what led me to this conclusion.

Did anybody else get a bit confused around that time, or am I totally off my rocker?

Just to add to the conspiracy, Jeff Skoll (one of the two founders of ebay) was born in Montreal and moved to Toronto at the age of thirteen (where he remained until graduating from U of T). He was thus thoroughly acquainted with the Bay, and cannot plead ignorance.

Was there ever a lawsuit filed?

just to demonstrate famous colour striping of the Bay.

It seems to me that a few years ago the Bay's logo was also written in different coloured letters, making it look even more like ebay's, but I can't find anything pictures of that.

How would it be trademark infringement? Just sharing the word "bay" and having similar color schemes wouldn't be it...

It's not like anyone outside of Canada knows the color schemes of HBC nor that Canadians refer to it as "The Bay".

Last time I was in a Hudson's Bay Store was during a family vacation to Canada around 1989 or so. I remember thinking the store looked like a run down Montgomeryward's and "monkeywards" (as we all called it) was already a low class joint to begin with.
