Stupid Question Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

Ok I know you guys are going to laugh and mock me.

I'm a bit confused about NWN - I thought it was a mmorpg with monthly fees and everything?

Few NWN threads here got me curious so I looked it up and it doesn't appear to be one.

If it's not something with monthly fees it does look like a game I'd like. But should I wait for Dragon Age?

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

no monthly fees whatsoever. Even the persistant worlds are free. But they don't have the player capacity of mmorpg's. Only 64 max I believe.

It is a good multiplayer games. and there are some good sites set up to help you find good players to play with as well.

should you wait? No. Dragon Age isn't going to be like NWN. I believe that may be more focussed on single player. And will have less customability than NWN I'm sure. And Dragon Age is not based on the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons ruleset (though that may be a plus for some people ).

NWN is a little dated. So don't expect top notch graphics. But the gameplay is solid. Just don't expect it to be like BG2. That's what most of the haters expected.

Like Diss said Except about it being a little dated graphically. Some of the lighting effects and textures have a good wow factor.

I'd add the warning not to play the module that the game ships with (the Original Campaign, as people call it) as it is pretty second-rate compared to the two expansion modules and from the many many thousands of fan-made modules there are a few hundred that are really quite exceptional.

I don't know if you remember Shoot-'em-up Constuction Kit, but NWN is in many ways Dungeons-'n'-Dragons Construction Kit. Easily the most moddable and modded game there is going at the moment.

Pah! I made an awesome kamikazi game for that. You were a carrier, and the bullets you fired were Zero fighters that exploded on impact. It was hilarious fun

Put an end to popups!

Playing NWN MP is a great way to cheaply see if you like online RPGs. If you do, and have the time, you'll probably want to move to a proper MMORPG, but NWN MP is still great fun.

although in my case I like NWN MP (though not persistant worlds), but I don't like mmorpg's . At least not enough to play more than 2 weeks.

You could always wait for NWN 2. I don't know when its coming. But NWN is dirt cheap. NWN platinum edition includes the original game with both expansion packs, all this for 50$ cdn.

No, I'm actually saying that Barinthus said "If it's not something with monthly fees it does look like a game I'd like" and you responded "...you'll probably want to move to a proper MMORPG..."

I made no claims as to the relative better/worse levels of NWN and a "proper MMORPG"

you're right. NWN mp isn't as good as a MMORPG. It's better.

I had the most fun playing NWN MP (individual campaigns). Far more than any mmorpg.

So, Jamski, are you saying that if my reason for the purchase is for its SP aspects, NWN wouldn't be worth it?

SP or MP or Both, NWN is well worth the money.

As to NWN vs MMOGs, well from my perspective (with WoW my only experience with MMOGs), I would rate NWN superior to WoW.

W***ers, gankers and other assorted losers and cretins are a majority on MMOGs. On the other hand, they tend to be a minority in NWN MP.

EDIT - self censoring of a word I wanted to use so it isn't censored of it's meaning by the auto-censor.

Nod I prefer not to go into something that require me to pay a monthly fee. I don't have that much of spare time so it'd be a waste of money.

If I'm correct, NWN MP is limited to 64 players? If so, is there a server or whatever you Poly folks get together?

it's well worth it for SP. I've played alot of SP. Along with the original campaigns, there are many modules available for download. Many of them are very well made, just as good as the Bioware created stuff. I've played modules with voice acting as well- and the acting wasn't half bad.

Many of the Poly NWN players are playing at a server called Folderol. Jamski could provide a link for you (or you can find it in game).

There are a couple of ways to connect to multiplayer games. If you know the IP address, you can just type that in. Or you can just select games from a list. And if you want privacy, you can enter password protected games.

And you can always make your own modules any time you want - even if you don't have a CLUE about programming you can still set up quests and monsters and items and maps using the awesome toolset NWN comes with.

Why? The Platnium edition is out with all the patches and both of the expansion packs plus a bunch of free modules. I believe that's currently atound $39.95 but you might find it discounted at some big warehouse store.

Yeah, Jamski's rubbish at building mods, but somehow he managed to come up with the Dungeon of 'poly.

He hasn't done its sequel yet mind....

Barinthus, once you get NWN then you too can play the Dungeon, and join the horde of people badgering Jam to write a sequel.

I spent ages working out how the hell I could fit a door into a wall in the toolset, but once that was done I was away! I even found time to create loads of wootly kukris, but sadly the product will never be released. Calling your mod The Kukri Book wouldn't really make it too many friends, and people would end up wondering what the hell all the in-jokes were about - just like DoA in fact!
Is it possible to have a bag (for example) with items inside within a chest? Or, to be more specific, can I take the properties of a bag of holding, change the graphic to that of a book, put a wootly kukri inside, and plonk it on one of the bookcases? Just a thought....

NWN also has quite a large following here on Poly. There have been many NWN specific threads which have broken the 500 barrier.

Most of the PWs have nothing like the 64 though. Folderol has anything between 0-12, unless popularity has increased/decreased recently.
