Windows XP x64 Edition is now out...and it's a free upgrade Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

http://microsoft.productorder.com/clientx64/

More information on x64 Edition: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/default.mspx

There's more to it than just being a 64-bit version of Windows XP.

It uses the newer kernel from Windows Server 2003:
quote:
Windows Server 2003 includes a variety of performance improvements in the kernel, the core piece of code responsible for scheduling application and service execution, and for overall management of system resources such as memory and disk I/O. Performance improvements in the OS kernel should translate into better service and application performance, since all services and applications run under the guidance of the kernel.

Microsoft has improved the way the kernel schedules thread execution and synchronizes requests for resources, which could help reduce contention-related performance problems on large, multi-processor servers. Additionally, Microsoft has optimized the memory manager to better handle systems with large memory, and has also improved the heap manager, which is used by applications to allocate and free memory.

For example, Windows 2003 contains a new type of heap called the Low Fragmentation Heap (LFH). The LFH reduces the memory fragmentation that occurs when applications allocate and free memory, which could improve the performance of applications that perform these operations frequently. Microsoft takes advantage of these changes in its own services: for example, Microsoft has employed the LFH in the Active Directory service to improve its performance.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

However...

It will require a "clean install", meaning a format.

Am I correct in thinking that this was introduced to support the new 64-bit Extreme Edition desktop chips from Intel?

Those are looking pretty damn expensive, but hopefully they will come down in price over the coming months.

Yes, DanS.

EE chips will always be expensive.

Athlon 64 chips are relatively cheap, and even the standard Pentium 4 chips are 64-bit in the new stepping.

I don't think it was coming out to support the 64-bit chips from Intel. The roadmap had been like this for a while, I think Intel waited til MS released this for their 64-bit desktop chips.

But just to be clear, the Extreme Edition chips are both 64-bit and dual core and that there aren't any Extreme Edition 32-bit dual core processors? IOW, if I buy any Extreme Edition chip for my desktop, I will get both new features?

Yes, the dual-core chips are all 64-bit.

The dual-core AMD chips offer substantially better performance though, and are also 64-bit.

Excellent, thank you.

Re the AMD chips, they do not offer substantially better performance for the applications that I use most.

Right.

This is their first x86-64 chip.

They've made IA-64 (Itanium) chips for quite a while.

Since many of our partners are taking part in this program, you should check with your PC manufacturer to see if they support the exchange on your x64 computer. If they support the program, your PC manufacturer will be able to provide you with a CD that includes all of the right drivers and software specific to your computer. If you built your PC yourself or have purchased it through a system builder, you can make the exchange through the link to the right.
