I don' t think the US really knew for sure whether there was WMD. It didn't matter either way because they could use the weapons angle to help with their propaganda. It helped convince the American people that invasion was nescessary.
Once they were inside Iraq and got to look around, close up they realized, hey there is nothing here. Great. To all their critics they say tough beans, the invasions over now. Your words mean nothing, we got what we wanted.
Sure it will make it a bit tougher for the next one, but people have short memories. Anyway I doubt the US will pull another Iraq not for a least a few years.
