Down Under cemetery given OK to bury dead standing up

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - An Australian company has been given approval to begin work on a cemetery where bodies will be buried vertically to save space and minimize impact on the environment, a spokesman said Thursday.

Tony Dupleix, director of Palacom, the company given permission for the cemetery, said the plan would involve no-frills burials, using a body bag rather than a coffin. "When you die, you are returned to the Earth with a minimum of fuss and with no paraphernalia that would affect the environment," he said.

The cemetery, proposed for a field in Derrinallum, 180 kilometres west of Melbourne, would feature three-metre-deep holes, Dupleix said. It is reported to be the first cemetery in Australia offering the option of being buried standing up.

Anna Jamieson, of the Darlington Cemetery Trust which will manage the cemetery, said the plots would be ideal for environmentally minded people but conceded it is unlikely to replace the time-honoured horizontal interments.

"If you are interested in the environment, it's beautiful land on the Western District plains facing Mount Elephant," she said.

"Some people will think it's great but other people might prefer a traditional burial."

Whould you mind? And why not just cremate everyone. That saves a lot of space. Who cares when you are dead?
Being buried in a body bag though....gives the mafia hit feel....

Cremation is best. They say it's all environmental, but I'll bet the bodies are still being embalmed . . . or don't you foreigners do that?

SpencerH.

Now that's exactly the out-of-the-box kind of thinking that I like when we're talking about a grave matter such as getting rid of our dependency on oil.

We should use dead bodies as a source of fuel in power plants. It could help replace coal or oil. In fact, we should also use cripples and unwanted minorities.

yeah in New Orleans they have an issue with bodies floating away or something. I remember they had to do something with gravesites to prevent that.

I used to want my dead body tossed from an ariplane onto one of Saddam Hussein's palaces in the hopes that he would happen to be there at the time and that he would be so scared that he'd have a heart attack, but George Bush ruined my hopes.

you could free Saddam Hussein take him to Syria so he can seize power there and build many palaces there, and then you can be dropped on a palace there.

Take initiative man.

I also recall the legend that as the bodies decomposed and the rigor set in sometimes the bodies would not only flot but pop out of the coffins in a sitting position or legend to that effect.

They started renting out long shafts down into the earth and relatives needed to pay annual dues. If they lapsed then some other family got the prime spot. Hence it was giving them the shaft or soemthing like that. I can't quite remember as New Orleans is meant to be a drunk fest.

I want to be placed in a vacuum seal and thouroughly irradiated killing all bacteria. You just never know when you'll need your body, why I could come back from the dead, and my life like appearance would allow me to catch and eat more people then other zombies that didn't think about this in their life.

You'd think that Australians wouldn't have become so desparate to save space just yet... but that's Sydney I guess.... plenty of space to bury horizontally up here.
