So how many footnotes did you end up with? 632 is a pretty impressive number.

dunno. I'll look. This is a reasonably complete draft, so there will only be a few more.

OK

824 so far. But more than half of those are references like Phd. 76b8 which are just references to Plato (in this case Stephanus' Page 76 section b line 8 of the Phaedo).

They still count.

With 824 footnotes, can you even claim to have written it yourself?

If many of the footnotes say things like "here I disagree with X, who is full of crap", then sure..

Of course, some of them are just people who I agree with on mainstream issues to do with the stuff I'm writing about, but who haven't dealt with my specific topic – because nobody really has.

My supervisor shares a similar view to me (that's how I got interested in it), but he's never gone through the text and tried to provide a definitive account of it.

Tired of ads?

Did anyone else catch that "Sophistry" is bolded -- rather appropriately -- in Aggie's thesis?

It looks like crap. There's no way you could get away with that kind of stuff in a real field.

What the hell kind of footnote is "Here I agree with Bob".

Terrible excuse for academic masturbation. Time to cull some jobs and funnel the money elsewhere.

It's better then the footnotes in the first example... it's like half the page!! Is he writing the whole paper in small fonts?! It's a 450 page thesis, but with out footnotes it's like 5 pages

Hey, I've seen worse in Academic papers. I've seen history papers in which only one line on a page was part of the paper, and the rest of the page was a footnote.

Personally, I hate footnotes and would prefer endnotes. If you have that many notes, that's the preferable solution. I'd rather have the choice to look up the references than see a page full of footnotes that I may or may not be interested in reading at the moment.

It means: "I haven't originally invented the idea, and here are the credits" which is something important in the academia.

Besides it meand "While I can oppose Bob on other issues, in this particular case, I agree with his argumentation I linked to - just so that you can better understand how Bob's argument fits into mine".

Completely useless indeed

shouldn't you agree or disagree with an idea in the body of the papper, and footnote where the idea originated?

Well, my advisor talked with me about my paper recently again, and he said that I need to limit direct inclusion of secondary source material and instead, use even more footnotes than I already have.

So yes, according to my advisor, footnoting the idea while expressing agreement or disagreement is the way to go. So that you can provide more of an original argument on why you agree/disagree, rather than rehash everything the other author discussed on a particular point.
