Not yet maybe, but there will be significant changes to the labor force in the next decade or so, and I would be suprised if there were no stagflation especially if energy prices increase too.

Imran,

You don't think having a bunch of workers retire is going to cause problems when we already are having trouble hiring people with the right skills while others stay unemployed?

3% growth with government deficit over 4.5 of GDP is worrying.

Everything is going to cause 'problems', but stagflation? Naaah. We Americans are smarter than the Europeans on this thing, we don't have a knee jerk reaction against immigration. Frankly, if things start getting bad with workers to retirees, I can easy see the government letting more legal immigrants in (especially when all the WoT hubbub becomes less pronounced).

The deficit is running at more like 3.8% of GDP and dropping.

We don't need more fruit pickers. We need more accountants and system analysts.

wait, i thought that the service sector was the least important and that the farming and manufacturing sector were the most important. why then would you want more accountants and system analysts (services) and less fruit pickers (agriculture)?

Btw, we LEGALLY immigrate more of the accountants and systems analyists than we do fruit pickers. Illegal immigration takes care of the later, really.

Wouldn't labor growth not be the problem since France has a large supply of unemployed people from which to draw on?

I think you are confused.

He was saying that the output per worker hour in France is higher, but that the total pie in the US is bigger because we have more workers. In addition, our lead in workers is only growing over time. In any case his numbers were more in line with Germany's numbers than France's.

That's true, but don't you think that stagflation would have to present itself before there would be any political will for that.
