Absolutely horrible game.

Ploding gameplay, micromanagment out the wazoo, abstracted epochs that take the fun out of it, a horrible map generator, and the same horribly inept AI as the first empire earth.

I played a 1vs1 game where niether me or the AI had any advantage or handicap, and the game ended with me in epoch 6 and the AI presumably still in epoch 1 I didn't even rush them, I took my time, and went easy on them. but they did nothing to defend or bolsters themselves except build dozens of outposts and fortresses that I just stomped over with an army of artillery. They barely even had an army (once their initial rush attack was anhilated by a fortress I built early on). In many of the games, I often witnessed the Ai commiting suicide with his peasants, too - just endlessly sending them into enemy territory, past a fortress or something, where they would be quickly killed one by one.

EE2 has some very good feautures and some horrible things, too. The horrible things definitely include pathfinding and the suicide peasant problem. Also, under certain conditions, it seems to slow down even on computers with powerful video cards.

I'm a bit surprised there even is an EE2. From what I recall the original wasn't that much of a hit. Why try and make a sequel from a lacklustre title to begin with? Unless its code recycling...(is EE2 similar to the original?)

maybe you have your reasons but for sure I cant understand why so many people call it crap

Ok

Just asking

and the previous game I played was empires dawn of the modern world and it was ok as well

this whole epoch deal is a different path for me and makes an interesting twist

the game is however, as previously stated by me, a tad bit on the micro management side, but then again as a professional manager, it just falls right in line for me to look over a multitude of details

Then you and I can discuss it.

I turn on the cheat the other night (easy level) at very start of the game and notes the AI was already about haft way building his second building (fort) and his scout was heading straight for my city. In EE 1 there scout was like ours, going around and scouting, but not strait for your city.

Full PM-box? Change here!

yes

I am just experimenting with this epoch system as I have never used one before

I found that shortly after the scout find me (and usually does some biting on my people) I am greeted with several different attacks one after another and enough to keep me moving

now I am new to this series but find it more enjoyable to have to defend then simply wait to attack them before I am pressed to keep my homeland safe

I have to get back to playing

I havent used the cheat mode or editor mode yet but will report back

Looking forward to productive talks about the game and well, I aint anal about people voicing opinions just well I am enjoying my $50.00 + dollars of hard earned money on the game and strategy guide

I will get back and post as I see things progressing

I do like the fact that when you win crowns you have several options to deploy the benefits of them

Gramps

One other thing

I am starting at 5 epoch and mving to 15 as it seems to move things along a llittle quicker

I am still starting with 20 citizens but not the "quick start" where you have a bunch of buildings and military units

cheers

Is this Epoch system in use any sort of way in other games?

I dont remember seeing it

I have played where you had to complete strucutres to get to another level or even have "X" of something like wood or gold or what have you

I like the idea and just need to refine the process to combine tech race focus and a defensive posture in the meantime..

This is where I now find myself after about 8 hours of playing the game

I summarized it in my earlier post.

Ploding gameplay - With few buildings to build and little else to do in the game, the gameplay revolves around slowly collecting resources and slowly churning out units, so that they can quickly die.

Micromanagement - You are required to harvest a large variety of resources, and have to manually tell each worker to do so (and you'll often have 60 or more workers, not to mention all the replacements for those who are killed or those who deplete their resource). There is a map where you can quickly assing workers but it doesn't show you where the idle workers are or allow you to decide which one goes to the job, so it's not very practical unless you are working in only one territory. You also need to manually garrison certain buildings to make use of them, such as universities and temples.

Abstracted epochs - The epochs are no longer ages, and have no specific theme to them. Instead, they are sorted into abstract groups with epochs 1-5 being "bronze age" 6-10 being "middle age, ect... There is no steady advancement through history, but instead periods of stagnation with sudden jumps. The units remain the same throughout many of the epochs aswell - for example, each civ has three uniqiue units - one for each of the first three groupings of epochs, meaning that through the span of the game they only upgrade that line of unit 3 times. There is also no longer a stone age, which was one of the few novel things about the first game.

Horrible map generator - Few choices in the land forms you can make. the choices, as I remember them, are:
"Large Islands" where the world is made up a couple circular-shaped islands that have been quartered like a pie-chart into different regions.
"continents" which is basically the same, only with more irregular shaped and larger landmasses.
"inland" which is just all land
"Pangaea" which is also all land, but with a trivial amount of water that borders the map
"mediteranean" which is the the reverse of Pangaea (there are not even any islands in the middle, just a huge amount of water that hogs up two thirds of the map)

You also get the choices of selecting how mountainous and forested it is, and how many rivers there are. Choosing a map to be "mountainous" means that there will be one mountain plopped down somewhere. Choosing it to be heavily forested means that there actually are forests and not just the odd tree randomly scattered around the map. And "many" rivers often ends up meaning only one, sometimes two and maybe even a half a river that doesn't have a begining or end and is basically just a lake.

And then, of course, there is the inept AI. I don't think it cheats as heavily as the first game, atleast not with average settings (although it does, atleast, have the annoying habbit of claiming a second territory before the player even has time to discover one, let alone build a town there), but I almost wish it did cheat, because it's ****ing useless. It sends it's workers to be past enemy fortifications like lemmings, it builds up an initial army and then flounders around unable to do anything if it's destroyed (usually because it's busy commiting suicide somewhere) and it doesn't come remotely close to keeping up in technology, as my example above shows.

quote:
The people here love Europa Universalis and Knights of the Old Republic, so if they hate Empire Earth II, it must be a good game.

So I was right, there is a niche market for crappy games - made up of people like you.
