And I'm not sure what I want to do with it.

I was thinking of starting a journal of essays, stories, poems, artwork etc... and using a forum as a way for people to submit. Basically people post stuff to a forum, and over a month people have a chance to get feedback/debate/discuss etc... and at the end of a the month... pieces are nominated and put to a vote. The winning entries make it into that month's journal (published online in pdf format).

That's the basic skeleton of the idea... wanted to put it to you guys because you're all a bunch of creative intelligent monkeys and I figured there'd be people among the ranks here who'd want to help/or make a contribution (non financial that is... no profiteering here).

Why bother? The world is full of writing already.

Publishable writers won't submit things because they'll be trying to get published, and unpublishable writers are such for a reason.

Seriously, a good idea is to let people post their personal essays and such. Maybe not select some by voting and post, but I would like a site where people can post thoughts/essays/rants that do get discussed in a civil fashion. Maybe the best can then be published separately.

You'd basically need a forum there with sections (political essays, gaming essays, personal life, whatever), but also strict moderation. By that I mean, no spam at all or vanity threads, every thread is supposed to be a thought-out post. The subject might be less or more serious, but it should be a thought-out post made while using the brain.

A wiki is probably a bad idea, because most people won't want others to modify their creative works without notice. I won't.

There is an RSS feed with all the changes (though admittedly it does grow overwhelming very quickly).

At any rate, a wiki (or at least a MediaWiki) can be locked down by placing the following in LocalSettings.php:

The thing is, for creative works, each person has his or her own style. Thus, having other people to rewrite sections of one is only going to make it read like a patchwork.

From a writer's point of view, I much rather have others give me comments and suggestions that I can either accept or reject as I see fit.

Wiki is good for some forms of writings, where style is less important than substance and/or accuracy.
