I saw HGTTG yesterday... very, very different to the books (to be expected)... but still quite funny. Good to see they kept it in the capable hands of the British.

Who else has seen it, and what are your comments....

casting Mos Def as Ford Prefect was a surprise though. I always thought Ford was a perfect demonstration of British wit... so using an american kinda struck me as strange... his performance was a bit underdone too. But still good. I have no major grievances... though the scene where they get smacked in the face everytime they have an idea was a bit

I went in with the concept that "It's not the book. It's not meant to be the book. It's the movie" stuck firmly in my head. I really enjoyed it. There were quite a few laugh out loud moments and it was full of in jokes.

Casting an American as Ford Prefect made one of the lines from the book/movie absolutely sparkle:

"Arthur, what if I told you I wasn't from Guildford?"
"Well, that explains the accent."

Imran makes a good point... each incarnation of the series has been different... so we shouldn't be too disappointed by the movie not being like a book. The medium is the message after all...

I was happy with the film... I'm not a snob.

That was the perfect voice for him.

Arthur Dent was played quite well (though the opening scene with him knocking his head and such made him a bit too comical... he's supposed to be the serious, sober englishmen being caught in a world of insanity... which I guess was portrayed quite well)...

... the towel element of the movie wasn't explained well enough though

What'd people think of Zaphod?

I think Zaphod has been a character which has always been open to a lot of interpretation. Colossal ego being the constant there...

iThe film is either getting panned or praised on the papers, the only common view seems to be that Martin Freeman is good as Dent, Stephen Fry is amazing as the voice of the HHGTTG (which I can well imagine) and Bill Nighy (sp) is either a saint or a sinner.

Re. Bill Nighy: It wasn't how I had envisioned Slartibartfast, but once I got over my preconception, he played the part very well, IMO.

Yeah... Zaphod was portrayed fairly well... I thought Slartibartfast would've been older though.... maybe played by some Gandalf looking guy... but it didn't ruin anything... I'm just picking nits. Stephen Fry has a voice made for this sort of thing.

Just saw it today. It was pretty damned good actually. Not perfect, but that was to be expected though.

Deep Thought was way different than I thought it'd be (though the TV watching part was brilliant). If you seen the trailer, you've seen the great Deep Thought part with people with big foam fingers... still cracks me up.

The movie was pretty different from the book, but better for a movie medium, I thought.

spoiler(highlight to read):
Vogsphere was great... especially the filling of the forms for Presidential pardon and the blowing of the horn for lunch. Magrathea (never thought that was how it was pronounced, btw) was interesting with the different dimensional portals. I thought Slartibartfast was well casted, btw...

Oh, and the "For Douglas" at the end was a great touch

The romance wasn't too grating either. Not bad, all in all. I may get this one when it gets out on DVD.

Indeed. I felt that the way in which the movie was most open to criticism was in its attempt to establish a plot.
