Brooks Robinson decries steroid enhanced records. Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

I would recommend that we give an asterisk to all records made in the '90s that have anything to do with strength.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson said Friday that baseball stars of his generation are upset that their place in history could be diminished because new records might have been set by users of illegal substances.

Robinson said he finds it troubling that some baseball players have turned to steroids to help advance their careers.

...

Robinson said he knows in his heart which players have been taking steroids.

"I don't have a lot of sympathy for the guys who do that," he said. "We are a pretty forgiving country. I think I know who did steroids and their records will never ring true to me. I think it is troubling for a lot of us."

Robinson played 23 seasons for the Orioles and became known as one of the best fielding third basemen before his career ended in 1977. He said the game has changed a lot since then. Not only has youth participation in baseball declined, but free agency and large contracts have also changed the dynamics of the sport at the professional level, Robinson said.

"It's a whole new game with the money out there," he said. "It's trying to keep up with the Joneses. They figure, 'This [steroids] is the way I can do it."'

Robinson said that, when he played, he never saw a teammate or opponent use steroids. He said that some baseball players would take "greenies" -- amphetamines that would provide a boost of energy.

"That's the only thing I saw," he said.

Robinson, who lives in Baltimore, said he believes strongly that steroids help players hit the ball longer distances.

"It's a matter of just getting the bat on the ball," he said. "That's what it's all about. Getting your bat through the zone with some speed. You see what those guys do. Frank Robinson was quoted saying, 'Hey, I am going to be way down on the list if this keeps going on.' They don't like it."

Robinson said that, with the growth in the number of teams, there has been a dilution of good pitching and questions about the legitimacy of the numbers that are being put up in the current era, which has heightened the generational divide in baseball.

"I think every player looks back on every decade and says, 'Those guys weren't as good as we were.' But that's human nature, I guess."

Then I recommend we give an asterisk to all records made in the '60s that have anything to do with anything, seeing as how speed makes you a better player.

That's not even counting that it has been reported that pitchers used steroids at a greater rate than batters.

You should consider, however, that when many of these sports were invented, they were invented by gentlemen atheletes, people who were not full time atheletes nor who excercized. It was just supposed to be your raw, natural talent and strengths. No excercizing, ne stretching, etc. This was considered beneath the true sportsman, and what seperated him from laborers and other people who used their muscles for a living. The originators of baseball would be scandalized to see the musclemen of yesterday, let alone today.

I'm not saying I agree with the use of steroids, since most people don't get the money to compensate them for the damage they do. Ametuer atheletes shouldn't be using them, but I don't really have a problem with professional athelets using.

American sports places too much emphasis on stats and records IMHO, if you are amonst the best at a given time and won championships then thats enough.

Although stats are creeping into British sports we rarely use them to decide who the 'best' is, thats where judgement comes in.

The NFL's steroid policy is kind of silly as well... people get around it all the time. Look at the three Carolina Panthers who were taking steroids before the SuperBowl. It was only found out now. The NFL's policy looks good, but players know how to get around it.

I wouldn't be surprised if most NFL players were on something.

After all, Romo basically announced that he was on steroids his entire career.

Well, we really don't have an honest commissioner anyway. We have a shill of management.

We can expect a whitewash of this whole sordid affair.

If I were McCain, though, I would again raise the issue of the antitrust exemption unless and until baseball has a truly independent commissioner with real power over both the owners and the players. Such a commissioner would have laid down the rules, not negotiated them on behalf of management with the union.

Sports don't have an anti-trust exemption. Only baseball does. The NFL, remember, lost an anti-trust case to the USFL.

And how in the WORLD is the NFL Commission 'independant'? Tagliabue and Rozell before him were both from the ownership. The great success of both of them was in breaking the players union, after all.

Sorry Mr. Robinson... You are just going to have to live with it...

Baseball rules at the time said NOTHING about steroids... while there might have been laws against their use by the government, baseball hid their heads in the sand and did not incorporate any such rule against their use in the rules of the league until forced to do so.

And since there were no tests done to actaully prove a specific person took them... you can't just label a whole generation of stats as steriod stats...

So suck it up Brooks...

Communist?

Fascist?

Whatever.

But a major "real" reason for the anti-trust exemption is because there was a commissioner who was looking over the sport and keeping it clean.

Because OMG MCCAIN IS A MAVERICK HE MUST BE BETTER THAN SELIG LOL. Although to be fair, it's not exactly hard to do a better job of promoting the game than Selig has. A midget with Tourette's could do a better job than that used car salesman, IMHO.

Selig crams it down the unions throat

quote:

Selig awaits union response on steroids
By Hal Bodley, USA TODAY
Commissioner Bud Selig should know this week if baseball's players union will embrace his request for a much stricter steroids policy.
Selig's proposal, outlined in an April 25 letter to union chief Don Fehr, calls for a 50-game suspension for any player who tests positive a first time, a 100-game ban for a second offense and a lifetime ban for a thirdviolation. Selig also wants amphetamines included. To be adopted, the plan must be approved by the players.

Fehr said over the weekend the union wasn't ready to discuss the plan, which comes four months after the players opened the current collective bargaining agreement and approved a stricter policy. He predicted a response by early this week.

Selig, citing an improved relationship between the commissioner's office and the union, wrote: "Last winter, we reopened our agreement to deal with steroids. I am asking you now to demonstrate once again to America that our relationship has improved to the point that we can act quickly and effectively deal with matters affecting the integrity of our great sport." Selig added, "Don, I continue to believe that time is of the essence in addressing this issue."

Selig, in admitting the current program isn't strong enough, said: "Regardless of whatever incremental progress we have made under the current agreement, we continue to have a serious integrity issue with regards to our current policy and our great game."

Said Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) ranking minority member of the House Government Reform Committee that held a hearing on steroids in baseball on March 17: "It's weaker than the policy Congress is considering, but significantly stronger than baseball's current policy."

Former union executive director Marvin Miller told USA TODAY on Sunday the players erred when they reopened the current agreement in January and approved a somewhat stronger policy.

The current CBA expires after the 2006 season, but the steroids policy extends through 2008.

"I expect that in the next go-round we will perhaps see that spitting on the clubhouse floor will be at least two lifetime penalties to be served consecutively," said Miller.

When asked if he'd discussed reopening the CBA with Fehr, Miller said: "Nope. He hasn't asked me. I know why he hasn't asked me; he knows what I think."

Selig, who does not need union approval for players not on 40-man rosters, said he will make changes to the minor league program, including tougher discipline.

Atlanta catcher Johnny Estrada said, "It's about time they stiffened it (policy) up. But the testing has got to be better if the penalty is going to be that stiff for a first offense. I don't want to be getting a positive test for taking supplements."

Now he can say he's done what he can, and blame the union

With a real commissioner, the issue would not be a matter of negotiation between management and the union. It would be a matter of "the best interests of baseball," and would be imposed by fiat by a strong commissioner. As I said, I would support ending baseball's antitrust exemption unless and until they appoint the true commissioner with real authority to act independent of both the union and management in "the best interests of baseball."

The key thing here is being independent of management. The very first commish, Judge Landis, did whatever he wanted to advance the best interests of baseball. Naturally, management didn't like this, but they couldn't remove him unless he died. Once Landis died, the owners made sure that the commissioner wouldn't ever be that strong /independent again. (Gross oversimplification, of course.) Now, if Congress were to impose a commissioner...

This would be one of those posts were people wonder what planet you are on. The Commissioner is controled by the owners... that's his role! He serves at the pleasure of the owners and if the owners want, they can fire him. He can't act independant of the mangement because THEY ARE HIS BOSS!
