My reasoning for putting the shortcuts in was that it would take marginally longer to go around on the actual turn, but you go out with higher speed, since there are no sandbags there, which might have a certain advantage.

I think the shortcuts are too short comparitively, excepting the 5s one.

What about having a max speed for each type of car? A MAX max speed?

Max speed (Turbo): 20
Max speed (Perf): 16
Max speed (Sway): 12

That's more realistic anyway ... and gives turbo a bit of an advantage

On your track specifically, I would really suggest a skinnier track. Unless we have a TON of people, you really don't need 4 wide... 3 wide is more than enough. (Heck, real NASCAR often is only 2 wide ...) More crashes and more unpredictability will occur from that.

I'd also make it a bit shorter - from first glance it looks a bit longer than rah's (or my suggested one), and with all the turns, that will slow things down a lot.

Makes sense. Actually I was thinking of a thinner track myself, but wasn't sure just how thin it would make sense to make it. Here's another idea for a track:

code:
************************* *************************** ** ** b** ** b** ** b** === s b** *** a b** *** n b** *** d ** *** t ** *** r ** *** a *** *** p **** *** ** ** *** a ## ** *** l ** ** *** l ** ** *** e ** **** === y ** ****** ** ** ******** ** PP ======== s/f ** ** ******** ** ** ******** ** ** ******** ** ** ******** ** ** ******** ** ## ******** ** ********** ** ********* ** ******** ** ****** ** **** ** ** ** ** ** b*****b b***b bbb

Here, most of the track is 2 tiles wide, except the start / finish straight, some of the steeper turns, which have banked surface, and the sandtrap alley. I was thinking about it, and it does actually sort of make sense to scatter the sandbags there randomly each turn. The track goes clock-wise from the start / finish line.

On the topic of Sandbags, another nightmarish idea is having sandbags flatten out the more times they are hit.

Say after 3 hits they dissappear. I would give a bigger advantage to those lagging behind, and more incentive for those in front to make sure they drive around rather hten plow through.

It would be a nightmare to keep track of however

Most nascar tracks are 3 wide. Once you get an oil or two, two wide is going to be awfully restrictive. And it makes it harder to set up for the turns.

Actually they are wider than that. However, most drivers follow one or two different lines.

Yes, they're actually 4 to 5 wide in most places, but you rarely see more that 3 cars across at any one time.

True. However, most tracks can't sustain more than 3 cars wide at turns without crashes ... at big tracks the announcers are amused when people go 4 wide, from my limited memory of watching such things

Definitely 3 wide here, though. Too much advantage to swaybars otherwise If you just wrap your 'b' lanes around both ways, that should do it.
