Applecore Inflate your Upload Space

I've encountered this strange thing which I suppose is a little game or prank for children, but I don't understand it. Maybe our American posters can help shed some light on the subject.

It goes something like,

The 1st person holds an applecore.

1st person: -Applecore.
2nd person: [unintelligible] possibly -Nothing more.
1st person: -Who's you friend?
2nd person: [says the name of somebody]

1st person then hurls the applecore at that person.

That's it.

So at least three questions arise:

*) What does the 2nd person say to begin with. "Nothing more" or something else?

*) What in God's name is the meaning of all of this?
Except for making a big deal out of the disposal of non-desirable fruit waste

*) Where does it originate and what is the story behind?

It seems to be an American phenomenon, which could possibly in itself explain a bit of the oddness , but further information on this mystery would be most welcome.

Oh, and apples

There was a Donald Duck and Chip 'n Dale cartoon that had it in it. Donald was a farmer and the chipmunks were being little pests that he had to deal with. They won, naturally.

1st person: Applecore
2nd person: Baltimore

Thanks for the links!

So it's Baltimore, and it would appear that it's an old school yard game dating back a long time, but nevertheless relatively obscure to the people of today.

Funny to think that such a chant rather strangely made it into a Disney cartoon and went on to entertain millions of people. Of course what makes it a real gem is that Donald keeps saying "errmm... me!" when he's asked "who's your friend".

Useless trivia moment.

How do you tell which one is Chip and which one is Dale? Chip has a tuft of fur on his head.

Tired of ads?

Really? I've never noticed, but I know that Chip also has a smaller nose, or snout or what it's called, and it's black unlike Dale's.

Also, in Danish they're called Chip & Chap.

I've watched a number of Disney shorts from the 40's and 50's lately, and some of the most fun are the ones that have the two little chipmunks in them. I also like the ones where Donald is fighting various insects, like ants and bees. Those fierce battles really bring out his character superbly.

Knabbel & Babbel, heh!

Always a few surprises to be had from cartoon characters' names in other languages.

Here are some in Danish:

Donald Duck = Anders And (and = duck)
Huey, Dewey & Louie = Rip, Rap & Rup (rap = "quack", a duck's sound)
Daisy = Andersine
April, May & June = Kylle, Pylle & Rylle (kylle & pylle = chicken-related "sounds"/names)
Uncle Scrooge = Onkel Joakim
Gladstone Gander = Fætter Højben (fætter = cousin; højben ~ "swagger")
Mickey Mouse = Mickey Mouse!
Goofy = Fedtmule (fedt = lard; mule = muzzle, nose)
Gyro Gearloose = Georg Gearløs
Cousin Gus = Fætter Guf (fætter = cousin; guf ~ "yum-yum")
The Beagle Boys = Bjørnebanden (bjørne = bears; banden = "gang of...")
Duckburg = Andeby (ande- = duck-; by = town, city)
Pluto = Pluto!
Chip 'n' Dale = Chip & Chap

Here are some in Dutch:

Donald Duck = Donald Duck
Huey, Dewey & Louie = Kwik Kwek & Kwak
Daisy = Katrien
Uncle Scrooge = oom Dagobert
Mickey Mouse = Mickey Mouse!
Goofy = Goofy
Pluto = Pluto!
Chip 'n' Dale = Knabbel & Babbel

Note that they are very Holland-ish inspired(the ones that are translated, yes. )

EDIT: Changed Daisy's species.

Hey, Dutch is much easier than I thought!

But Daisy's name is very confusing, Minnie is supposed to be Mickey's girlfriend! I wonder if there's something they're not telling us...

I recall that chip and dale cartoon as well.

I never could rember that second line

now I can wipe that from my memory and make room for more important things. Like how to say Donald Duck in 3 languages.

Donald Duck = Aku Ankka (ankka = duck)
Huey, Dewey & Louie = Tupu, Hupu & Lupu
Daisy = Iines
April, May & June = Leenu, Liinu, & Tiinu

Uncle Scrooge = Roope-setä. Setä = uncle, or, to be precise, the "brother of one's father", which means he's actually misnamed in Finnish; he should be "Roope-eno". So should Aku be an "eno", who is "Aku-setä" when referred to by the three nephews, who, in turn, are referred to as "veljenpojat", which means "sons of one's brother", and Aku is Roope's "veljenpoika", even though they are the sons of their sisters.

Gladstone Gander = Hannu Hanhi. "Hannuhanhi" has become common speech and is a noun or an adjective used to refer to someone who's incredibly lucky; the Finnish press uses this very often when the Swedish ice hockey team is mentioned.

Mickey Mouse = Mikki Hiiri
Goofy = Hessu Hopo

Gyro Gearloose = Pelle Peloton. "Pellepeloton", in turn, has grown to mean "loony inventor" in common Finnish. Yes, Donald Duck is that popular and loved here, and that thing about banning him because he doesn't wear any pants is just an urban legend. I myself learned to read with it, and the Finnish used in the comics is usually impeccable.

The Beagle Boys = Karhukopla. "Karhu" is bear, so it has probably been ripped off from Swedish or Danish; the Finnish version of the SWAT team is called "Karhu-ryhmä", "Bear Team", but I do not know if there's a connection. I find it unlikely though, given the differences in profession!

Duckburg = Ankkalinna, "Duck Castle"
Pluto = Pluto
Chip 'n' Dale = Tiku & Taku
