At the moment I mostly fear my influence on the RNG. McM can tell you all about my bad luck with the RNG.
Think:
1. Spearman effective defense 3, hp 4, against horseman effective offense 2, hp 4. 23% chance of this happening, if my math is right (way too many years, but it may be )
2. 3 horseman victories, and one retreat, is 11 victories 7 defeats, which is about in line with the averages - a bit high, but not too bad.
EXCEPT when you take defensive artillery fire into account. Three of those horsemen should have suffered at least a 50% chance of successful artillery fire; I forget how it figures the odds of hitting, but at horseman vs archer it's I think about 50%. So it's really 11 vs about 5 ... not in line with odds at all.

Not that i'm much to whine, and this was always a chance - and we did delay them a little, but I'm pissed that we didn't at least kill one of their horsemen, and only 1 even retreated. We do now know their veteran strength- 4 vet horsemen - and the likelihood is their east is pretty open.
I suggest we ask BoH to head straight for that iron city with their horsemen, and we'll send the swordsmen east as we suggested earlier. Their horsemen should do some damage at least, and either they'll plan for a second assault there - or they'll plan for the east to be assaulted, and be open there. I suspect the former, anywho.

You got the victory and your golden age. One of my archers got your Tyrian Guard down to 1hp and then lost all of his in succession. But I won all the other battles.
Trust me though, that you really didn't want a golden age yet. I know Phoenicia pretty much like the back of my hand. I know it's strengths (such as incredible production), but more than that I know it's weaknesses (such as incredibly poor growth potential). There is a finite optimal time period and you've now hit your GA before that time period. You're still in a despotism so that means you'll lose 50% of the potential from those wonderful Cedars of Lebanon (up to 6 shields apiece in a GA with the same-as-factory improvement whose name I can't remember). You don't have nearly as many cities or as much infrastructure as I had when I was Phoenicia so that means less production. I had at least 3 cities producing 25+ shields apiece in my GA, which was essentially a 1-turn companion infantry build, and another 4 cities producing 15+ shields.
You may forge ahead for a little while, but unless you can sustain it like I did (and it will be difficult because you won't be able to pull the wool over everyone's eyes like I did, especially not Beta or myself) then you won't be able to do much in the late game.
You know how toward the end when you took my iron and everyone had started to gang up on me? I was already so far ahead that it didn't matter, but if I hadn't been so far ahead, even my powerful army wouldn't have mattered because Phoenicia is in a central location where everyone can easily attack it except for Greece. If I hadn't reduced Paddy (Egypt) to a whimpering, quivering mass then I would have a war on all four sides.
BTW, that's funny that you were trying to bait me though since I was trying to bait you into heading onto the grassland and you did.
