No, I don't work at a help desk.

I'm the human that they talk with, and answer their questions/fix their bugs.

The point is, you aren't even smart enough to remain consistent. The only way you could congratulate/compliment me on raising my daughter is by my talking about her in the first place. For which you later razz me about.

I know pleasantries, and with people I know and like I will us e them.

That's plain not true, you insult people who haven't started it, you insult people who don't insult you back such as BK, and you insult entire groups of people(Christians, Liberal Arts Majors, Mac Users)

You are one piece of work.

The whole point of the thread was to force people to compliment eachother (ironic considering the topic of this conversation).

I picked the most visible aspects of two people and used them -- your business woes (with your daddy issues/family) and with your daughter that you post so much about.

The other one was Boris' porn collection.

Now think about just how inconsistent I was with the tone of that post, and seeing as I compared your business skills and ability as a father to Boris' porn collection.

Think about it, John.

The entire groups of people think falls under the "troll" category, and doesn't count.

As for BK -- that's mostly back and forth bantering like an old couple. This is actually a really good example -- I exchanged PMs with BK just a couple days ago, and I helped him solve some Windows problems.

Ask him if you don't believe me. It turns out I was a nice guy.

But it is breaking site rules nonetheless. I do not think that Ming will look favourably on people who admit they are breaking the rules, yet continuing to break them anyways.

JohnT being a sterotypical nerd. I didn't know glasses = nerd. Maybe in Asherville they do. Asher saw a picture of a man with glasses and saw nerd. Plenty of people on this forum have met John in person and haven't thought even close to a similar response.

Oh, and it CONTINUES to amuse me when Asher says he has people skills and then self-pwns him constantly when trying to prove it.

No one said glasses = nerd.

Look at the man's posts, especially about business. Then look at his picture.

You just know someone like that was bullied in high school. If you knew what high school kids were like.

People Skills != being nice to everyone, regardless of merit.

Skills are not passive -- you can choose to use them when you want to.

The lot of you seem to think people skills is just another name for being a nice, perky, likable person. You are confusing charisma with people skills.

I help people when they ask for help. Even people like BK or Agathon.

As for being nice to people always -- that's one thing I can't stand -- it's so phony. How the hell do you know what somebody really thinks if all they do is be nice?

If you ask me, that's a much bigger problem. I value the truth more than people bending the truth or lying to be nice.

From the Wikipedia:
quote:
Social skills allow a person to interact and communicate in nature with others.

Examples:

* Verbal communication
o Small talk or conversation
o Sharing and discussing ideas (politics, religion and sports are all common topics)
o Teaching or learning

* Non-Verbal communication
o Active listening
o Body language
o Paying attention

Traits that help social skills appear more polished:

* Verbal
o Smoothness of delivery (lacks stuttering, awkward pauses, etc.)
o Intelligible speech (not too loud or soft, avoiding monotone but not dropping off the end of sentences)

* Non-Verbal
o Confident stance (standing up straight but not at attention)
o Relaxed manner (not too tense, not falling asleep)

This is so nonsensical as to be bizarre. You can tell all that about me from a modified baby pic?

And Imran and I have met a few times ( ), so I have a feeling he would be more of a judge of my overall character than you. It's the difference between, well, seeing a picture and being there.

So anyone that knows about business is a nerd?!

Coming from the computer scientist?!

And I've seen him in person. He doesn't look like a man who'd be bullied in high school.... at least not more than any other ordinary person.

That is a BIG part of people skills. You seem to think that people skills doesn't mean you have to be nice to most people, which is silly.

To help out:

http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?PeopleSkills

quote:
People Skills 101

* Accept criticism without taking it overly personally. See FoggingTechnique.

* Criticize ideas, not people if possible.

* Make a point to learn and remember everybody's name, even if you have to write it down or use memory association games.

* Greet everyone in the morning with a pleasant "hello"

* Being liked is sometimes more important than being right. Kissing-up works. That's true, and sometimes the converse is also true. Trying to win the approval of others doesn't necessarily gain you their respect.

* Compliment others sincerely.

* Avoid "tech talk" when talking to managers and customers if possible. They usually don't want to hear details unless they can do something specific with the information.

* Trim your nails, shower, and wear clean clothes.

* Keep your communications short. Use email to give details, not voice.

Actually, I'm rather disappointed. A really funny thread has just totally gone down the crapper.

I am nice to most people. What's silly is how you and JohnT have problems forming real arguments -- something that is quite essential to social skills, IMO.

Asher, if you act nice, many times the acting rubs off on yourself.

If someone is nice to you all the time, you should take it as a blessing and not question the content of their souls, as obviously it's good enough to be consistently kind.

Being dishonest is not being nice. But telling a white lie is a lot better than ruining someone's day. Knowing how to balance that out is just something that has to be learned from experience. I can't give you a formula for how mean something is compared to how much the recipient needs to know it.
