WTF? No safe period? I just lost over 40,000 gold in 3 minutes, all from the same person attacking like 6 times in a row!

This is actually getting more and more fun. I think I'm getting the hang of it now - it really isn't that hard to play, but I suspect it is hard to master 
The key to not losing all your gold when off-line, is actually two things.
A) Don't have all your gold lying around. Bank it. If your gold is banked, attackers cannot pillage it, if you are defeated.
B) Since you'll make a lot of money overnight, or when at work/in school, you are in for an attack sooner or later. Therefore, you must build a strong defense. Don't think too hard about offense at the start - there are so many people playing this game, that it is not hard to find someone with around a million gold unbanked, but with no soldiers - i.e. free gold Go for defense af the start, since you will!! get attacked sooner or later.

This game, I'm slowly discovering, requires patience
Rome was not built in one day, and neither is an empire in Dark Throne. But if you recruit at a steady pace, and keep using your gold to acquire more miners, then eventually you'll have a decent army. The strategy needed to lvl up is one of slowly building your army, when still low lvl, and then once you are strong, you can start attacking. Be sure to build early, though. And don't leave your gold lying around.

Ive gotten the basics of it at least at low levels.
The easiest way to make cash is attack people, but that raises your level and exposes you. While if you do not level, you can safely mine and slowly build something while staying safe from attacks.
I guess something in the middle is good.

How many deposits you get in the bank, depends on what mine upgrades you have. The lowest (nickel mine) get's you 3 deposits base. The system is complicated. If you use 1 deposit, a timer starts, giving you that deposit after 24 hours. Each of the three deposits has it's own timer, and you can never exceed three deposits with a nickel mine.
Every mine upgrade gives you 1 extra deposit.
Alliances are basically a group of people agreeing not to attack eachother, and helping eachother if attacked. When farming for gold, you may want to think twice about attacking a player who is a member of a powerful alliance, since that may mean getting attacked by all members of that alliance that are within 5 lvls of your own.
Also, alliances gives a bonus when recruiting, since members can click eachothers links, thus adding recruits to eachother.
