Jury duty is very very easy to avoid. Merely make a statement like " I think that if the police charged them , they must be guilty"

That should get you off the jury pretty quick. Make it a pro-defense statement if you like. If its a civil trial, just say taht you think that most plaitiffs are whiners and you're sick of people suing each other.

Yeah, but I think KH wants to avoid voir dire as well. Depending on the area, one would still have devote several entire days to hanging around a courthouse waiting.

When I was called for jury duty in NYC, I spent three days at the courthouse downtown in a large room with 100+ other people. Maybe once an hour, if that, the court official came in with a bingo-style rotating thing with the names of all the potential jurors. They would pick some out for voir dire, and the rest just had to keep sitting and waiting. I was never even called for voire dire, just sat in that damned room reading a book and watching the TV.

It may be that educated people tend not to get picked, cos stupid people are easier to manipulate (plus only wasters with nothing to do can afford the time to sit on longer trials).

Show them how smart you are and they'll pass you by.

I don't get why people want to avoid jury duty. You get to sit around.

If I were sitting around with decent entertainment, fine. But if you get on a jury, you have to spend hours a day for possibly weeks listening to lawyers talk. You've seen Imran's posts...would you want to endure that?

Tired of ads?

Write back to the clerks that you are an eskimo and look forward to eating the heads of the guilty, and of course check the box that says you are not a US citizen.

Then tell us about any strange vehicles parked on your street, and odd clicks while you are talking on the phone.

I have never been called for jury duty in Canada. I think its much more rare here to be called as juries are pretty rare in civil trials and are not required for summary conviction offenses ( similar to misdemeanors in the US). So its only the serious criminal stuff that gets to a jury (and even then it is an election by the defense if they want a jury or judge alone).

I believe as a lawyer I may be exempted from jury duty anyway ( at least in some provinces)

I'm pretty sure that a non-citizen can't legally sit in a jury in the US. Why don't you just call the courthouse and ask?

Look up the phone number of the clerk of court that you've been summoned to. Ask him if someon who is not a US citizen can sit on a US jury, and if so, can he berequired to answer a summons to jury duty.

IIRC the US can draft non-citizens into the armed forces, but fof them it's not compulsory. If a non-citizen refuses military duty he can never be naturalized. I don't know if the same deal exists for jury duty.

Tell them your beliefs. They'll put you on a trial that you'll be more objective about.

My wife just served a 2-week stint of jury duty. The fact that her mother was killed by a drunk driver (and that Laura had to testify about it) was enough to keep her off every possible jury. This hints at two things:

1. There's a fair amount of alcohol use in Knoxville crimes.

2. They don't like having people who have testified against defendents judging them.

Anecdotal evidence don't mean ****, but all the potential defendents in Laura's JD stint were African American, even though Knox County as a whole is 8.6% AA. (2000 Census)

However, the overall county is 20.1% African-American. Is this a City of Baltimore summons or a County of Baltimore summons?
