Bush energy policy? What are you talking about? Congress has not passed his legislation in any form since it was introduced years ago.

ANWR isn't part of Shrub's energy policy?

It seems the Senate passed a budget bill with certain budgeting for ANWR drilling, but I'm not sure that's enough.

It's pretty amazing that a non-defense issue can be kept secret despite public pressure in the US. In the EU (which is horribly antidemocratic however), the bureaucrats try to publish everything they can. If secrecy is busted by the public opinion, it's a crisis in EU circles. It's surprising that the US, as a large federation which is much more democratic than the EU, doesn't really care about transparency.

The Bush WH is exceedingly anti-openness. They've classified previously public documents, they gave every department standing orders to comply as little as possible with FoI requests, and fight them if they can.

Secrecy is the enemy of democracy.

If the gas price goes up and the economy goes down, I'll just make up the difference with commodities futures and shorting the equities market.

I've processed FOIA requests within GSA, and there are no such orders. (and yeah, we handled ****-hot highly classified DoD and DHS procurements, so it's not just FOIA requests about your local branch post office)

Naah, that was more like the cut-off baaah as I draw my proverbial knife across the proverbial sheep's throats by taking advantage of the volatility in the financial markets while the sheep huddle in a confused mass.

Again, you and all 8 judges are missing the point. Energy representatives (whose only interest is fattening their own wallets) were the only ones helping Cheney (an energy industry alumni himself) form an energy bill that taxpayers would be paying for. It has nothing to do with my politics; it has everything to do with the blatantly obvious conflict-of-interest that went into the formation of the energy bill that will be payed for by my and your tax dollars. It's going to be another corporate giveaway that will do little meaningful in the way of helping the US' energy problems.

And that's standard operating procedure with lobbyists and lawmaking in general. Cheney (who I can't stand, but he's a smart guy) did nothing illegal, and there's no right by Congress, the judiciary, or the public to obtain access to confidential proceedings of that type in the absense of a violation of law.
