Anti-Unit Wall Rule being discussed over at the UN: Discussion on this proposal Put an end to popups!

With the next Phase of the game looming (after a current F-P/PAL proposal to use 2 weeks for any rules Modification), there is some discussion over at the UN about modifing some of the game team rules. One of the New Rules (proposed by Trip, no less), is the elimination of using Units to block a coastline to prevent a Naval Assult. I'm of 2 minds over this proposal, as I wasn't very happy as to what had happened in the PTWISDG, but then, how can something like this proposal not really be expoited in some form or fashion?

Opinions and Discussion, please.

Idea 1

Perhaps a compromise could be that a nation can only defend coastline that contains Hills, Mountains, or a fortress. This would bring a bit more strategy to the game, plus I don't think it would be fair to deny the home team its defensive tiles.

This way, if a team wants to pull the coastline shuffle on Grassland, they will have had to make the necessary improvements to do so.

Idea 2

Not as fond of this idea, but here goes. Grant coastal defense to true defensive units only; no warriors.

Should still be pretty easy to get 6-10 spears together, so this idea may be DOA.

Here's my idea(s)....one that I think should be in every game.....

1. You edit the game to allow more units to attack from sea and coastal squares. You give these units a modified attack value of only half of what they normally attack for on land.

2. You edit the game to add in more amphibious assault units that would be available in every age. Why in the world would one have to wait until the modern age to be able to land against a beach head? These units should have a generaly weaker attack strength than that of the equivilent defender in the same age.

Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

In Conquests, you can now simultaneously take non-combat units and land, correct? So one must at least use HPed units to block coast.

It's still quite possible, though. So, should it be prevented? I suppose so, it's a bit cheesy to be able to construct an invulnerable wall. But has he proposed any actual text? A balance has to be struck between allowing military units to be on coast and preventing the construction of seawalls.

Edit: As I think about it, I agree with BigFree. Seawalls really should be allowed, it's just that they shouldn't be untouchable as they are. If it weren't for the inherent Amphibious Attack bonus, I'd say give all units the ability; but extra, Amphibious units would have to be modded in to balance things given the attack bonus.

I agree with BigFree and Kloreep - there can be added one unit in each era with amphibious attack

Full PM-box? Change here!

Sorry guys. I have no problem with the practice of coastal blocking. It is part of the game. Scandinavia was designed to have amphib assult in the mideval age to show how dangerous they were. I do not want to mod the game or put restrictions on teams in anyway regarding this issue.

I too don't want to mod in any new units or change existing ones. In fact, I like Donovan's first proposal. Not only will it help fight unit walls, it'll give it a more real life aspect as well. You simply don't have an army camping on the beach; you have an army inside coastal fortifications. Plus, fortresses will be used more often.
