chronic router problem Remove this text

We have a wireless network, and at least once every few days that network goes down inexplicably. One moment the internet is fine, the next the router has disappeared (to the computer). It simply can't detect the network. The only solution is to turn off every computer and then reboot (you have to have a period in which NO computer is on) - actually, we just unplug the wireless receivers and then plug them back in, which works just as well. However, it's driving me crazy and has been occuring more and more frequently. WTF is the problem?

Check the router's temperature. Some brands can't handle too much traffic and overheat causing them to malfunction.

Yes it can. AFAIK, it's a structural design problem with some routers.

Reference to posters name. Seriously Kuci, some routers are better than others. I've had a few problems with my wired linksys that required a reboot of the router, and have not had a problem yet with my D-Link.

Have you tried looking for Firmware updates? That's the first thing I'd do before looking to buy a new one.

I like the heat idea and the firmware update idea.

You should explore both those options.

Where is the router physically located? Does it have open air around it or did you stuff it in a cabinet somewhere?

Tired of ads?

Try putting a fan next to it for a day or two and see if it changes things. If it does, then the problem is definitely heat.

Do you have wireless phones? Are they working at a 2.4GHz frequency?

Also check if it's close to an electrical box - even more if you say it's in the basement. The magnetic field can affect your router.

You might also want to try putting the router upstairs, I've heard that it's better for the signal.

Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

The router should have an interface into it, to check the firmware. Did you keep the instructions? You should also be able to locate instructions online, if you know the brand and model, you can go to their website.

If there is a new firmware patch after the date you bought it, that means you can install a new firmware. Most routers usually have 2 or 3 firmware updates the first year after they are sold.
