I'm glad they make it an option and not a default. That's always been Google's biggest strength is thier minimalist approach.

Some people use IBM Community Tools (ICT): http://community.ngi.ibm.com/#

I dunno if that works outside the intranet though -- it should. IIRC, there's a special intranet build we use for integration with other systems.

Others use Notesbuddy: http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/notesbuddy

I prefer the simplicity of GAIM with the "Meanwhile" plugin:

Add in an RSS whatsit and it'll be awesome. My homepage is already a handy bookmark list with Google on top, so this works well.

edit/ Not so well. Why can't it keep me logged in through frames?

I just installed GAIM with Meanwhile and I had it up and running on our Sametime server in under 10 minutes. It was exactly what I was looking for.
