Actually, most good strategy games are roleplaying games (in the true sense of the word). Civ isn't a stellar example, though.

Full PM-box? Change here!

Well i went back and played all the contenders(that have been getting the mentions here) over the weekend

And my opinion has changed slightly. in descending order we have:

6: DarkForces
http://www.mobygames.com/game/star-wars-dark-forces

5: Rebellion(Supremacy)
http://www.mobygames.com/game/windo...-wars-rebellion

4: KOTOR
http://www.mobygames.com/game/star-...he-old-republic

3: Jedi Knight(Dark forces2)
http://www.mobygames.com/game/windo...-dark-forces-ii

2: Tie fighter
http://www.mobygames.com/game/star-wars-tie-fighter

1: Xwing(just shades it for me)
http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/star-wars-x-wing

I've decided to try to finish Xwing(and later Tie fighter) - so i might run a thread soon with screenshots and requests for help

So far i'm on my first tour having completed a selection of the training sims etc. Its an awesome game, great atmosphere and great playability, even after all these years

Got spare money?

I've never played any SW games as I generally distrust games based on movies... I suppose the best of these games are the exception to the rule that "movie games" suck?

However, now I'm itching to play one of the SW franchise games (especially the X-wing and Tiefighter series, which I've always heard great things about), but there are just too many coming out each year... Judging from this thread KOTOR and space flying sims are worth checking out...

i) Any recent (or upcoming) space flying sims from LucasArts?

ii) What kind of game is Battlefront?

None that I'm aware of, at least in the vein of X-Wing and TIE Fighter. There have been flying games, but not like those.

And Battlefront is basically Battlefield:1942.....except with less evil and more Ewok/Jawa mass killing.

It's my feeling they'll do another, but the genre is slightly out of fashion in the last couple of years. Plus, there is a lot of demand for light-sabre combat games, because light-sabres rule.

I rented Lego Star Wars for PS2 and you know what? It's a pretty good game. If you liked Legos as a kid and you like Star Wars then you'll like this game. A little short and I wish there was a few more missions but all in all a good game.

Star Wars Lego? I dunno man...

Battlefront is not bad...you get to drive around in AT-AT's in some areas. And being a droideka is pretty fun rolling around on Kamino. But yeah, the plot is kind of lacking but the sheer madness of some of the battles is good fun. I really really like the Battle of Hoth. I was a rebel wookie and seeing those mutha's coming at you is scary as heck.

I'd say play KOTOR. It's a good game worth playing if you like Star Wars.

Kudo's for child of Thor compiling the list.

I played Star Wars Galaxies but as with any MMORPG, the people kind of are jerks. I was a commando that was severely underpowered..but once the developers fixed the profession everyone wanted to be one, while others complained that the commando was too strong. The commando class got 'nerfed' (downgraded) and another profession was "fixed"...only to have everyone complain that that class was too powerful. Repeat ad naseum.

that's why I got out of Galaxies...and I was such a good Imperial commando too. My best memory was attacking a rebel HQ with 50 other Imperial players, all different professions...pistoleers, bounty hunters, carbine people, unarmed Teras Kasi warriors, etc. I was the only commando and they needed me to flip some kind of switch. Everyone was guarding me and I had 2 Imperial bounty hunters (that were player characters) guarding me as we went through the base killing Rebel scum.

Best memory ever.

Lemme see if I can dig up my few screenshots from Galaxies before I quit...

Put an end to popups!

Me on Dathomir. I was hunting rancors and got separated from my group. There's these NPC creatures called Dathomir Nightsisters that are brutal...some of them carry these rifles that killed other players in one-hit...while others rode tamed-rancors. There was an Imperial prison on the planet that I visited...that was fun. Trying to outrun Rancors while I was trying to find the prison was fun.

Sorry about the quality...there's supposed to be all kinds of weeds and grass but I turned down those extra bits down to help the game run faster on my comp.

Dead Rancor on Dathomir. I asked my hunting party to group together so I could take a screenshot. It took about 5 or 6 of us to take that thing down with extra help from our droids and some pets. That cat-thing in the left corner is someone's pet they had attack the rancor. The rancor went after the cat thing while we shot it, and some pikemen stabbed it. That was fun.

Me about to get killed by a rancor. I was yelling for help but everyone else couldn't do anything. The rancor charged me for some reason and killed me in one-hit. Again, I apologize for the bad graphics...but I turned down everything so it could run on my comp. And trying to take a screen pic while you're trying to not get killed by running away is harder than it sounds.

I got sucked into it for 10 hours yesterday!!(Rebellion/Supremacy).

I've tried to really get into it soooo many times - i look at the CD and game manual and think to myself, 'well its a strat game, with lots of Star Wars content - maybe this time i'll get into it?....'

Still yesterday was about the tenth time i've fallen to the darkside and decided to give it another go. I enjoyed it!

I was even getting my head around the super micro-management it becomes when you have around +20 planets to control - i'm sure you could see veins on my temples expanding as i was trying hard not to forget all i needed to do(i never bother with the droid help - they suck!).

It was a bit like meditation - i had so much to think about, i sort of broke through the pain barrier to a higher plane of existence or something!

Anyway i plan to use it when i'm a having a much needed break from some of X-wings tough levels

Oh and its not TBS as i stated earlier Still who can play on anyting other than 'very slow' speed settings? It just goes ballistic if you try faster speed settings I think that would really give you a brain blow-out.

I usually sped things up when I was constructing a Super Star Destroyer or Death Star.

I basically ignored all the messages unless they said something about one of my people, or about any of the worlds under my command...but I usually keep a large garrison on every Imperial world to keep the local populace in line.

sometimes i find 'very slow' too fast! Still i guess it betrays my tbs background. I like to action ALL messages(or atleast read them and delete) - else i worry i've missed something important.

The 'pause' feature is annoying, in that you cant access any other screens while paused. I would have liked a psuedo-tbs type game.

my god - i actualy seem to be enjoying talking about Rebellion! Why now? after so many attempts? I'll stop now and go get help.

sorry.

KOTOR is the bomb.

KOTOR 2....kind of buggy. Come on....the HK Factory mission you can't complete. Although you can admit that the time constraint by LucasArts for K2 was a lot different for K2 than the original one.

RPG wise---->KOTOR

Action-wise---->Battlegrounds.

I just like walking around Hoth in an AT-AT..........but all this talk about X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter makes me wanna play those games again.

But my friend said that the flight simulator division of L.A. probably tanked because of the market for FPS's and 3rd person PS's...but you never know.........

(hoping I can fly a TIE Defender again....)
