	how do I get rid of popups with Firefox? Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

this damn thing is supposed to get rid of them. But I guess the advertisers have found a way around this. . 2 sites in particular give me the most trouble. One of them happens to be this one. How do I get rid of these popups?

Tools > Options > Web Features

I think you can pick a style that gives you two banner ads instead of a popup here. At any rate you should allow the popup to pay for the services you use.

Screw that. Pop up ads try to take control of your desktop. You own the desktop so you should decide what goes on with your desktop.

Yes, but the owners of the site own the site, and say that if you want to use it, you pay, either through pop-ups or 'Poly Plus.

I personally pay through poly plus because I like poly, however, I see no reason why clicking a banner aid now and then wouldn't pay for the small amount of bandwidth one person uses. Plus the extra site traffic gets them higher advertising rates not to mention if someone uses the Amazin links which have recently been reestablished after the owners had a profit sharing disagreement (I suspect) with Amazon. Then of course there is the store and the promotional value the site gets through good word of mouth.

All in all I really don't see how they have a right to complain about much if someone decides to take control of their own desktop. They get adequately compensated in many ways.

Try ZoneAlarm. It blocks popups, and it's a good idea to have a firewall if you don't already.

You'll need the Pro version, but, ahem, keygens are your friend.

Firefox blocks pop-ups well enough. I haven't seen any yet.

Hmmm.... I've never gotten a popup through Poly using Firefox. That's strange, Diss.

I also get an annoying pop up using Firefox when I visit this site.

Firefox 1.0.x doesn't disable popups generated from plugins by default.

To enable this...go to about:config (type it in your address bar)

Right-click in the resulting config page somewhere and select New -> Integer.

Type "privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins" in the resulting dialog, hit OK.

Type "2" in the next dialog.

This pref can actually take three values:

* 0: open allowed
* 1: the opened windows are treated as popups, but they're allowed to open (we limit the number of these types of popups)
* 2: the window is a popup, block it

That would be terrible if Opera enabled it by default -- it breaks some sites that use Flash popups.

hmm, that seemed to work, but now I can't get to some forums like this: http://www.metallica.com/index.asp. If I click on Fanzone and try to go to message board, it won't work.

I'll try to take this off, and find the the direct link, and then put it back on.
