if i was talking about the Godfather, and needed to distinguish it from Godfather part 2, i would call it either Godfather part 1, the first Godfather, etc.
As in "the attempt to run the first and second Godfather movies together into one narrative, with the Michael Corleone flashbacks from Godfather part 2 coming BEFORE the first Godfather movie, is a travesty, since those flashbacks are not history, but represent Michaels own romanticized view of his father"
Its like, the timepiece i have on my wrist right now, I would just call a watch. But if I needed to DISTINGUISH it from a digital watch, i would refer to it as an ANALOG watch. Ditto a "rotary" phone. A black and white TV. Etc. There are some terms that are only used to distinguish something from something else.
