So some guy interviewed 1,500 kids in Chicago and concluded that if a kid is a witness of a violent event, it is more likely to be the cause of such an event within the next 2 years. He compares it to a contagious illness.

I don't know why they mention 2 different names (one for the article and one who obviously has done the research).

There is also a link to the article but it requires a subscription. My university unfortunately doesn't have one that allows to view this. It would be nice if one of the Polydemics with subscription could provide me with the document (per mail.. atagod § gmx dot at)

Anyway good article. What's interesting about this is that it describes violence not in a generic way, but it goes to an actual violent EVENT.

was the study based on actual interviews.

A lot of people like to be cool and say they have seen shootings when they never have.

I know I tend to exaggerate when I describe a firefight outside my back window when I was living in navy funded housing in the poor section of Newport News, Virginia. In retrospect, they may have not been guns, but they may have been throwing firecrackers at each other.

The evidence of the study is very clear. If police just would give up all of their armament and make arrests in a civil way, children will soon learn that violence isn't a good thing.

Ofc it is obvious, but still it's an interesting item for a discussion.

It would also be interesting to note, if virtual violence would fall under this category as well.. like the often blamed computer games or movies in the cinema.
I don't know about any studies in that direction though.

Seriously though, I think the generation coming home from iraq will bring a lot of violence with them.. I don't know if there is a point where you've just seen enough - I guess there is and that is probably the cure, otherwise you carry the virus and if you rage against your fellow citizen the virus violence is taking control over you. Must resist....
