This thread is not about how we can survive an asteroid impact or what we should do in case....

The point of this thread is about political implication IF we survive an impact...Not how, when and why....

An asteroid has made it to us, some country, probably the US, destroys it or makes it change its course. What will happen to the world politicaly? Will it create a cold war like WW2 did and followed by Korea and Vietnam.

I think it will create somekind of coldwar if indeed the US saves the planet cuz right there they will proclaim themselfs saviors of the world and the whole planet will owe them, when in fact, all they thought was to save their own ass first an we just happenned to live on the same piece of land as they do.

The point is:

Let's say that the US infact saves the planet from an asteroid impact. Everybody cheers, until the US knocks on someones doors for I dont know, oil. They could say: " We, the US, have saved you from a deep impact, and if it wasn't for us, you would'nt need oil because you would all be dead. Since we saved you, you owe us so give it up."
And they would use this excuse for the following decades to obtain what they want and play with the public opinion. And what would annoy the hell out of me is that they would have done it to save them selfs first and foremost and not the whole planet but would use it as an excuse to obtain freebies....

The US have no right to ask for anything as a gift for saving the world because as you pointed out they are saving themselves also.
And if they go ahead and ask for gifts/tributes that the world will simply hate tham more than they do now.

Haven't read all answers, but I think the US would have no success in "puppetrizing the world" because

- some people wouldn't believe there was a real danger at all

- some people would say the US created the meteorit (or at last changed its course so that it could hit the Earth) to play savior, and to win political capital from it

- some would say they didn't care about the world when acting, only about the US

- some would also say it was all due to the evil US/EU/Russian/Chinese/Jewish/black/white/communist/capitalist/whatever conspiracy, but that doesn't have anything to with the original question. We also would have lots of Poly threads about it.

So in other words nothing would be substantially different from the situation today.

Yeah, everyone wiould cheer but the US would get no political capital from it, since it had to do it to save itself, so it was not some charitable task, but sdelf defense. If someone attacks you and you kill them, others may laud you for doing it, but youi can;t then go up to them and demand compensation for having removed the threat to them.

In a more realisitc note, if the threat was trully worldwide, you would probably have Russia and the US and EU working together with the US, EU, and Japan fitting the bill.

Anyway, I suggest the US redirect chunks of the metior to destroy the cities of countries in which there is stuff we want. These cities would have been destroyed anyway, so no big deal. Then, all the ingrates will be dead, as they would have been anyway, and we, the US, can get what we need.
