Get a small handgun that works, carry it hidden but redily available in a quick release holster. Don't take it out unless you are going to use it. Practice alot, until it's natural as scratching your ass and takes less thought. Find someone who knows what they are doing to teach you so you don't kill yourself or someone else.
The best bet would be to avoid such situations. If you're with Mom, choose your routes to avoid trouble, (do this anyway) don't go looking for it because you're tough or something. Get a good pair of running shoes. Call a few friends and see if they want to go walking too. If they want to go somewhere that you don't want to go, let them go.

Repeat that "learn to use it" part a million times.
This weekend, some gangbanger moron hiding from the cops managed to shoot himself with a 9mm Glock in his pocket about 30 feet away from us.
It didn't sound like a shot from anything that big, and when the guy went down, it looked like he just slipped on a little slope down to the beach (it was Memorial day afternoon on the beach, after all). He got up again, and then collapsed without a sound. Still thought he was trashed. Got up a third time, then down for the count with his face in the sand.
Went over to him, and (a) there was a major blood trail, (b) his leg and jeans were soaked from the groin to the ankle. and (c) we spent most of the rest of the afternoon and evening describing what happened to the cops.
In this particular moron's case, he wasn't used to using or carrying a pistol. He was one of three who got into a confrontation and brandished the weapon, but didn't shoot anyone, about a mile from us. The cops responded quickly, and caught the other two near the scene. One of them was the brandisher, and passed the pistol to our fearless moron for him to try to sneak away with it in his pocket.
Lucky for him, the actual owner/thief/user didn't know anything about proper firearm maintenance, so the pistol misfired and didn't develop near normal muzzle velocity - not even enough gas pressure to eject the cartridge.
Unlucky for him, he didn't understand the concept of the handgrip safety on Glocks.
More unlucky for him, the muzzle flash and blowby from the slide was contained between his jeans and his skin. It isn't too likely that he'll have any more use for his genes than he will for that pair of jeans.
Even more unlucky for him, the round traveled longitudinally down his thigh and severed his femoral artery. Amazingly, he didn't bleed out before paramedics arrived to stabilize him, but almost certainly he'll lose the leg at the hip, if he lives.
If he lives, his next destination will be prison, where the Pegleg Pete act will assure his reputation, once the prison population finds out he blew his own leg off by accident and crispy-fried his gonads.
In other words, if you're going to carry a lethal weapon, learn how to properly maintain and handle it.

Oregon has carry laws, my guess is that NM does too. The east coast is wierd, only the bad guys have guns.

MtG, oh my.. sounds bad. Well if it was his main arteries in the groin area, it is a miracle he survived that long. And I don't know about these things more than that, but yeah, if he survives -> prison -> story goes forward -> not fun. Especially if he loses a leg for it, or gets a nasty limp. I guess we know how he gets his nickname.
Space, yeah, what MtG says about learning to use it.
IT's same with guns, like the story says. It doesn't matter if you know how to point the gun and pull the trigger. I mean, that's a lot already, but if you're in self defense situation, and it come quickly perhaps, you have to be able to take it out and shoot. It's not that simple, you have to practice that one too. It's high stress situation, adrenaline flowing, you don't want to start choking when it's time to dance, and if you turn into hypermaniac, you'll lose your gas soon so basically this means that no matter what happens, unless you're a cool professional or something, the mistakes you make will multiply themselves. You are in a state out of normal, either hindering you or not, but it means that you need to have learned it good like second nature, or you won't do anything, or if you do, you do it wrong which can cost you.
Don't think you'll be rational if you get jumped or something, you might not be. It's like fighting tired, you can have awesome technique, but once you're dead tired from adrenaline rushes and all that, in matter of less than a minute maybe, you will be sloppy and nothing works and you end up only beating yourself. That's why pro fighters train when they are tired. Some of them just get tired first and then start fighting in training sessions. That's what makes the difference.
So you want to defend yourself, even if you crap your pants and gas out and your head is ringing without no one making the first move yet. You can't over analyze it then. YOu either have it or you don't have it. This is where it pays off, or doesn't.
