Classic Games: X-Wing Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

I dabbled with this a number of years ago, but never gave it a real try. The recent thread about which Star Wars game is the best caught my attention and now i've been playing this seriously for a few days. Loving it so far

One thing that really strikes you is the excellent use of cut-scenes to give you that Star Wars vibe. They go something like this:

Anyway things have been going great, untill last night

I appear to be stuck on a mission on the first Tour.

So i thought maybe we could discuss various stategies/tips or just old war stories in this thread

One thing i find i do automaticaly upon entering each mission is:

1: press F9 to increase my weapon recharge rate by 'one'
2: press F10 to increase my shield recharge rate by 'one'
3: set my speed to 'Max'(backspace key) to componsate

Also i go into the screen that controls the priority your damaged systems are repaired and shift the priorities around. I end up with shields and flight controls at the top with engines next and weapons last.

Are these good settings to use? I just made them up and have no idea - maybe i'm shooting myself in the foot?

Its hard to beat the intense(and strategic) dog fighting of this game

I think so far of all the rebel ships i like the feeling of i'd go with:

1. X-wing(just right)
2. A-wing(too light?)
3. Y-wing(a bit slow?)
4. B-wing(a bit lumbering?)

what are your fav ships and worst enemies?

X-Wing rocks(and is much more fun than the later 'Alliance' game i did play often a few years ago)

Ahh, good days. I remember having a flight combat joystick with a million buttons all mapped to various functions for the game... hardly had to press a keyboard button.

The X-wing is just right. I hate the slug-shaped Imperial battleships or whatever they are - mid-sized ships that have a hell of a lot of firepower and take ages to kill.

One thing I noticed you don't do is change whether the laser fire is linked or not, i.e. whether you fire 4 bursts simulataneously, or 2 and 2, or 4 individual rapid-fire bursts. Generally, as my aiming improved, I went to 4 simultaneous bursts so I could take out Tie Fighters with a single shot.

I have yet to meet the slug shapes(unless they are those 'troop transporter' types that fire loads of Ion cannon shots?), but pretty much any large ship with lots of weapons i try to stay well away from!

As for linking laser fire - i prefer the single(4x) shot as well, its quicker to fire which i find helpful in a busy dogfight with a load of Ties.

@ Kuciwalker - yeah X-wing: Alliance was the one i played alot of. Its early to tell but i'd say that X-wing is the better game, it certainly feels more like flying an X-wing should?

And Alliance didnt recieve any real mentions in the 'What Star Wars game is best' thread.

What those things with the yellow buttons? Its not got a 'top' button on the handgrip bit if its those ones - so makes doing a 'roll' pretty tricky.

I found a ropey old stick for my old p166 in a local store about a month back. I'd bought an extra 64MB stick of ram for my nasty new motherboard(that on board graphics nightmare one), and on the shelf was the joystick i'm now using.

I'd been looking everywhere for a non-usb stick with no result. I asked the guy in the shop if i could have it and he gave it to me for free(with an odd look like 'what the hell does he want with that antique' kinda thing)

Anyway I'm stuck on mission8 with no hope in sight........i have to find some slave transporters, but keep getting drawn to a load of troop carriers instead as they all look alike, and you can only id a ship by being so close you almost bump into it!

plus there is a Star Destroyer hovering around which always makes me nervous.

and i'm seeing alot of this screen currently

Its been a while since I last played, but I seem to recall that the laser batteries recharged much faster than the shields did. If you set the lasers to recharge at maximum and leave the shields as is, you will get power faster and fly at the same speed. On the other hand, you have to actually remember to transfer power over to the shields often.

I think I remember that mission. It's in one of those damn Y-Wings, right? I got it eventually. I think what I ended up doing to win the mission was keep playing till I got a perfect run. You have to be as fast as possible, and not make any time-wasting mistakes, to get all the transports. I'm afraid I don't have any real advice for this mission.

Yes, but it's nothing more than "keep playing it over until you either win or kill yourself" I have no idea how to minimize the time required to make a perfect run.

Looks like a funeral?

What does it take to play this game? Do you have to use emulators (I don't even know what that is???) and stuff like that? Do you have to be a tech wizard to play these older games?

There are a lot of games I'd love to play, but it seems to difficult (tech-wise) to get them to run on modern computers...

I'm not sure what it takes to run the DOS version. There's also a Win95 version that I imagine would be easier to run.

For Carlos Rex also

Win98se
P166
48MB Ram
2MB cirrus logic graphics card
Trust(predetor lite) joystick
Creative AWE64 soundcard

I got the X-Wing/Tie Fighters collectors edition which i run under MS-DOS prompt from Win98.

For old games i think using old hardware helps you enjoy the game more, well atleast the games run at the right speeds with all the correct sound/music. So i spent time setting one up.

@ Kloreep - your advice was 100% correct, shame i didn't read it before now

But i finaly succeded in the mission - deciding to ignore the part of the mission briefing that said i needed to destroy all the transporters before they reached the Star Destroyer

Even if i combine the current MHz of my two pc's - they dont reach 1.2 Ghz. You must have to use software like 'Turbo' to slow that beast down for many of the older games?

@Carlos i like to think my P166 'saved' me
Its shown me many great games i would have otherwise been unable to play if i'd had a modern pc.

Even running emulation software - or things like DosBox, you get problems with the games running how they should. Sound is a big problem - modern sound cards not being able to properly emulate older cards. I find sound to be a big part of the gaming experience.

Anyway i like to remind people of the old classic games that the home computer revolution has enabled me to enjoy since the 80's.

If you do love games alot then i reckon its worth having a 'retro' machine for playing the older games on. I got mine free - many people throw them out, so keep your eyes+ears open

Star Wars is going great - its very addictive(but then being a SW fan i guess i would find it so!), and very hard at the same time. That Mission 8 i got stuck on, well it took me about 15 attempts to get through it!

On that note i found a cheesey method to remove some of the anguish of dying all the time(which happens to me quite a bit).

In the main Star Wars folder on your harddrive create a new folder, call it something like 'charbackup' and after a sucesfull mission copy your pilots character file into it. This way if you die just copy/paste it back to carry on where you left of.

If you don't do this, when you die/get captured it is possible to ressurect your char, but you lose all your combat experience+rank

time for another pic! This one i see far too often also.

Kick a** pics! Man, I wish I could play X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter again. I dunno, I rarely used Rebel scum ships. I'm more of an Imperial pilot. But when I did use Rebel ships I liked the A-Wing cause that little ship could haul a**. It was a little underpowered, weaponwise, but I could run rings around the other ships.

Is the B-Wing that one that looks like a lower-case 't'? Where the cockpit is on one of the ships arms?

Anyway my favorite ship was the TIE defender, best of everything for the Imps. Shoot, I remember one time I was dogfighting against my friend and we both agreed to use TIE-lns. His joystick was broken and I could tell cause his TIE was shaking like crazy. I was taking potshots at him and he kept saying "Don't Shoot! Don't Shoot!" His TIE started shaking to the point where you would think the ship would actually fly apart. I got tired of seeing him suffer so I put him out of his misery and blew his ship up.

He was cool though cause he later said on his screen at home the whole view was jittering and shaking and it was getting him sick.

X-Wing was great, but TIE Fighter is the undisputable champ of the SW space simulator games. It had a great story line, awesome missions and was just incredibly fun to play.
