Not sure about Freud (isn't his stuff pretty much discredited today anyway?), but Darwin is easy to answer. He did make honorable mention, and the fact is that the looney fundie conservatives are a minority subset of all conservatives. I know plenty of conservatives who are patently embarrassed by the political link with Creationists. One doesn't have to be a religious nut to be a conservative.

It's the same, I hear, with "Coming of Age in Samoa".

However, that doesn't detract from an odd choice of books on the list... like "On Liberty", "Silent Spring", and "Unsafe at Any Speed", as well as the two Darwin books.

As far as "truth being liberalism's worst enemy", or more knee-jerk **** like that, it doesn't exactly look like truth is conservatism's pal, either.

It makes a certain amount of sense - mein kampf didn't inspire Hitler, he would've done the same stuff anyway, but the Communist Manifesto did have effects beyond the direct efforts of Marx.

The CM atually had very little influence in history. Engels' book, Socialism: Utopian and Scientific was far more important in spreading the Marxist viewpoint far and wide and building the socialist movement.

I can see the conservative beef with Silent Spring - it did, after all, lead to the banning of DDT, and many people have accused the DDT ban of causing the resurgence of malaria. Similarly, I can see the problem conservatives would have with most of the books listed. It's obviously not meant to be a very objective list of books, folks - the conservative perspective is obvious.

On Liberty is pretty mystifying a choice, though.
