Nothing worse than Vancouver, and what Christians in general go through there. Though I must say the folks on campus have a special hatred of Catholics in particular.

San Antonio is a haven, the only trouble I have had is from two Mormon missionaries here that I've been told to refrain from intimidating.

I like to go to the Catholic church in Jagna though I don't understand much of the sermon, you've never heard such sweet singing. Wonderful. The 400+ year old church with vaulted cielings...excellent acoustics. Man I miss that.

I can see it now.

Dear Pope Ratzi:

A fellow who calls himself Alexander's Horse and lives in Australia had the temerity to take communion in the Anglican church this past Wednesday, in direct violation of the edict in the catechism of the Catholic church. Though I am unaware of his home parish, or of his confessor, I felt the burning desire to report to you of his transgression, which he boasted of in public.

Yours truly:

Ben Kenobi

Depends if that was the first mass the priest performed.

They can't leave any of the blood of Christ in the cup.

They have them in Vancouver, there is an icon in the church on campus that has particular significance to me.

I'm sure if they have one in Vancouver that they would have them down in San Antonio.

Isn't this greed and vain?

From my personal experience, those that do this are most often cultists/extremists. I don't know many Catholic religious leaders at any level that have expensive tastes. All the leaders I've known in my own church, United Church of Christ aka Congregationalist (aka "The Liberal Ones"), have lived modestly, and their housing is provided by the church.

I'm not exactly a major proponent of greed and ostentatious consumption, but holding up poverty as a positive good always struck me as perverse.

quote:
Exactly which religious leaders are rich? Catholic priests own next to nothing. The pay for Protestant priests, preachers and etc. is generally well below the average for someone with a comparable college education. Some parts of the ceremonial vestments may be silk, but the priests and preachers don't own them. You might as well accuse servents of a household that provides a really snazzy livery of being rich.

Thorstein Veblen wrote that priests, regarding ostentious consumption, have exactly the same role as servants of a household wearing an expensive livery; they perform "representative consumption" in the name of their absent Master, declaring in this fashion His greatness. Each sect's "Master" is, down below in the people's subconscious, subject to envious comparison, in which case affluence is equivalent to potency.
