Fallout 1 and 2 combo pack... Tired of ads?

... for 19.95 Australian dollars. Should I buy it?

What do you think of these games? What genre are they (RPG + shooter?); are they good?

Thanks for your input!

RPG. No shooter, because combat is turn-based.

They are GREAT. Correction, they were great when they came out and for a long long time after that. I still replay them a couple times a year. However, if you've never played them before, they will definitely look dated, and some people are turned off by that.

Full PM-box? Change here!

yeah, people like me

I wanted to play this game when it first came out, but I never got round to it, same for Fallout 2. So now, I get it, and because of Diablo II, I can't get used to the slow paced TBS fighting. Also, the graphics are letting the adventure down just a tad.

Hopes up for Fallout 3 then..

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Turn-based fighting? Outdated graphics? Sounds just like Civ 2!

It's a strong buy then!

I have no problem with graphics that aren't state of the art... On the contrary, I demand it as my comp is pretty slow...

vovan,

It seems to have a lot of replayability value to you... Why do you like it so much? Great atmosphere and story?

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

Carolus,

I suppose you could call me a Fallout addict.

There are several things I really like about Fallout (referring to both games).

One is that the world is well developed. You could go about the main quest and see very little of the fictional universe. But pretty much wherever you veer off the main plotline there is something to see and do. Not only that, but the world is sort of 'cohesive', where the quests and such things you do make sense in the context. Everything just works together well. The sheer amount of things to discover adds to the replayability value: you simply will not see a lot of the content on your first run through (unless you cheat and read a walkthrough or something).

Another thing I really enjoy is that the characteristics of the character you are playing really alter the game experience. The main plot quests remain the same, but still especially for a game that old, they did an incredible job adding variety to the game. Playing a stealthy, cunning thief type character will simply not be the same as playing a stupid muscular type. This also adds to the replayability value: you can go through the game, and then play again to see how you could go about solving the quests using a different approach.

That having been said, I want to emphasize again that Fallout is old. Graphics aren't so great, and even the replayability and variation in the game world has probably been surpassed by more modern RPG games, simply due to the amount of computational power (and DVD space) available these days. Like Sn00py, I probably couldn't get into Fallout now if I hadn't played it when it just came out. Then again, I always have trouble playing old games that I've never tried before. Colonization, for example, I could never force myself to play, even though many people hold it in high regard, as by the time I got my hands on it, it was really old.

EDIT: I just looked up the currency exchange rates. It looks like 20 Australian bucks would just about cover a pitcher of beer around these here parts. Seems like a good enough bargain.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Thanks for your extensive reply; you've nearly convinced me! (I didn't know there was a civ group to promote commerce with Australia ("AU"), but you clearly belong to it! )

I don't have much experience with RPGs, so there isn't much I can compare (unfavourably) to...

Kassiopeia,

Care to elaborate a little?

Got spare money?

yeah turn based and outdated graphics like civ2, but you won't find the building or strategy of civ2.

It's a great game. You say you haven't played RPG's. That's okay. Most people think of them as sword and sorcery games anyways. these are different.

It helps if you like guns to like these games. Though it isn't necessary. But you'll find using guns is pretty important. You could go unarmed or use melee weapons, but I don't recommend that. In the first game you will find energy weapons to be best. But in the second game you can stick with small arms and you'll find some really nice weapons about the time you get into San Fransisco.

Dialogue is an important aspect to this game. What you say to people makes a difference. If you say the wrong thing you may screw up a quest. But have no fear, it's not the end of the world if you lose out on one little quest. So it's not like you have to reload all the time (except when you die). And dying and deathclaws go together in the first game. It helps to be a higher level before taking them on.

I love the fallout games. I even love Fallout: Tactics. Though that isn't an rpg, but a tacital turn based(or real time) squad game.

my next dog's name will be dogmeat.

Fallout series

I'll have to buy another copy of Fallout 2. The one I had was lost when I moved to another city. And I was just starting the game, I think I had recently left the vault...

Thumbs up all over, it seems...

I'll check if I can find them cheaper elsewhere, but I already have business with Australia... Figured I could buy something else to lower the transport-cost-per-game ratio...

Fallout is a superb series. The turn based combat is fun, the story is interesting, and the ambience and atmosphere of the setting is satisfying. I think the graphics stand up very well to this day. I actually prefer a neat isometric view over chunky 3d games like Knights of the Old Republic.

I recently picked up a Planescape: Torment + Soulbringer double pack, which I'll get into when my stupid video card fan is repaired.

I agree too, I prefer these kind of graphics. But it was generally the animations that put me off. There are only 6 side views for walking and so it looks strange whenever he walks down or up.

I think it's because they use a hex system (similar to civ2 maybe?- actually civ2 would have more sides since you can go in 8 directions). and they can't walk in a straight line when going straight up or down. They have to go diagonally.

If this is the place I think it is then you might want to look at

They're selling that one too. Don't know anything about Soulbringer but Planescape : Torment is often very highly recommended.

If you are looking for somewhere cheaper I would recommend this chap

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZjamesQ5fgardiner

He has one of those ebay store thingummies - sells everything new but rather cheaply as he does it all online.

At present he has the fallout double pack, the soulbringer/P:T double pack and Deus Ex 2 (I succumbed recently and bought this, although I haven't installed it yet) for ~$13-15 AU each. Postage is generally another $10 AU and I think he combines shipping for multiple items.
I've dealt with him before and he's really pretty good. Shipping usually takes less than a week.

[Edit: He also seems to have that Serious Sam thingummy that Leo's always raving about ... ]

planescape isn't for everyone though. A lot of people don't like it. I admit I prefer the Baldur's Gates games over Planescape anyday. But it's a pretty good game. It's a lot of reading though. But it's a good story, that you want to find the end to.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

True, but PS:T ranks retrospectively as one of the best RPGs of all time. For the small amount of money it costs to acquire, I think everyone should pick it up and judge for themselves. It has the sort of compelling, detailed plot I hope to find in every RPG. Sadly these days we tend to get KotOR style: fun to play through, with lots of cliche good and bad guys, a plot twist and almost zero intellectual challenge.
