MrFun, every decade of human history if filled with the same cruelty and malice that fills all humans. So, disregarding the ever present evil of humanity, you should try to pick out the few points where individual humans actually did something good and interesting for a change.

But what if I'm in a negative, cynical mood tonight?

I guess I would have to pick the 1850s as a white Northerner. The tumultous time during which Americans were debating over the very fundamental idea of human equality. It showed that people in any century and in any decade could believe in such principles as equality.

I used to have some old history textbooks from the 1890s inherited from my grandmother. Sweet Lord the garbage they used to teach kids! They're full of all that "white man's burden" trash, not to mention the obscenely glowing praise of the new "seperate but equal" doctrine. I loved the labeling of G. W. Carver and B. T. Washington as "credits to their race". They took the extra precaution of putting the word "exceptional" in front just in case someone mistook them for the wrong kind of person. It's also interesting to see Slavs and Latins referred to as races. Oh yeah, these people were innocent alright.

Sure, one could pick out the obscure fact to shoot down an exceptional decade if one were so inlined DrS. Sure, nothing was perfect, still isn't.

And it's funny because I bet it actually would be true -- that if Lucas's movies were silent, they really would actually be BETTER to watch!!

Ok, if we really want to argue about it. It's not about whether those people were innocent, it's about how they perceived the world to be as such. And yes, with "we", we mean Euro/Yankee types, the euro/yankee-centric doodles we are.

Very few truly bad men, out to oppress the world to make a buck. Some who were their tools. Most people just knew they had a job, a life, a community and a culture. The west was what we today might consider third world, so we still had a culture, but also were on the verge of a great age of exploration. Thankfully ignorant of where it would lead... For them anyway, but not for me. For you, well perhaps this age is a good thing.

I have found a way back, but I don't really belong.

It was the Enron of it's day. Towards the end, it was the biggest trading stock on the Pacific Stock Exchange. Somedays more stock traded hands than were supposed to exist. That should have given someone a clue that something was wrong.

25% of all Angelenos owned stock in it. Its crash caused the nation's first security fraud laws to be passed. The governor of California was voted out of office, and the L.A. District Attorney was convicted of taking bribes.

Bizarre.

Not really. The Kings of Hannover were related to the Kings of England so when there wasn't a male heir the King of Hannover got promoted to the much bigger throne.

The 'states got it's butt kicked and the white house was burned down, plus the luddite rebelion in Britain. Good times. Too bad things didn't last like that.
