Grizzly attack kills Canmore woman
Last updated Jun 6 2005 03:03 PM MDT
CBC News
CANMORE – A grizzly bear attacked and killed competitive mountain biker Isabelle Dube Sunday afternoon, when she and two friends ran across the animal while out for a training run along a popular hiking trail.

The male bear, which weighed 198 pounds and was between three and four years of age, had been removed from the same area a week earlier, when it followed a woman out taking wildflower photos.

"She definitely was just a great person," said Brian Lapointe, general manager of the Drake Hotel, which sponsored Dube in the Fernie to Canmore race last year. "We'll miss her a ton."

Dube, 36, was married and had a five-year-old daughter. She was a teacher and biked competitively, coming in third in the grueling seven-day, 600-kilometre Fernie to Canmore race.

Her teammate in that event, Maria Hawkins, was one of her running partners Sunday.

The three women were running near the SilverTip Golf Course – which uses a grizzly as its logo – when they spotted the bear about 20 to 25 metres away.

Dube climbed a tree, while the other two women slowly backed away, then ran for help. But the bear pulled Dube down, and by the time wildlife officials arrived, it was too late.

Officers shot and killed the bear, which was sent to the lab in Edmonton where they will try to determine whether it had health issues that would have contributed to the attack.

"There's no doubt she was aware this could happen," one friend of Dube's said. "Like the rest of us, you don't stop living because it may happen."

Dave Ealey, a spokesman for Fish and Wildlife, said the bear had been removed from the area May 27, after it continually wandered onto the golf course and, at one point, followed a woman who was taking photos in the area.

Niki Davison said she was photographing orchids along the same trail when she heard a crashing that she at first attributed to bikers.

"When I realized it was a grizzly, I stood up and tried to back away slowly," she said.

Davison said she would retreat when the bear looked away, then stop again. Eventually, after about 10 minutes, it wandered off. Her report led the wildlife officers to trap the bear and move it to nearby Banff National Park.

Ealey said they put a radio collar on the bear, and had taken notice when it came back into the Canmore area early Saturday morning. But they didn't feel it posed a danger.

"The bear was not aggressive, it behaved as a bear its typical age and sex would," Ealey said when asked why the bear hadn't been moved farther away. The grizzly was kept within its home range, Ealey added.

Grizzly expert Brian Horesji says it's unusual for a grizzly to attack a group of people. But he added that Canmore is becoming a classic case of man and nature battling for space.

Attacks will happen "as long as we have people and bears in that kind of close proximity, because we can't conceivably educate enough people to eliminate these situations," he said.

Dube was the first person in the province killed by a bear since 1998.

At the end of May, a grizzly attacked a man hiking in the Ghost River-Waiparous area. He was able to escape after kicking the bear.

198 pounds? It was a baby. She should have just got on her bike and rode off since she could have out ran him, but, young bears can climb trees so trying to climb to get away wasn't smart. It's cases like this that the USDF recomends people out in bear country (especially brown bear country) carry a can of bear spray. It's like mace but way more powerful so much so that even a 1200lb Kodiak will leave you alone.

All bears can climb trees, and usually they can do it faster than you can. Grizzlies can also run at close to 30 mph, so biking away won't necessarily save you. Going into a car or a house won't save you either, since they can easily pull doors off of cars or smash into a home.

There are five ways to deal with grizzlies, I'll list them in decending effectiveness.

#1 do't go to grizzlie country.
#2 carry a large calibur longarm with you.
#3 Use some other anti-bear device, such as bear spray, bear horns, etc.
#4 Raise your arms all the way over your head and shout as loud as you can while slowly advancing on the bear (bears know they are the baddest mutha****as in the woods, so anything that challenges them freaks them out, and they tend to run away)
#5 play dead (the bear usually sees you as a threat so if you're dead, you aren't a threat. This tactic won't work if the bear sees you as food).

I think they killed the last wild bear in AR in the 1950's.

Che summarized the best thing to do when there's a bear. If you don't have a way to neutralize the bear (either by running very fast or having an EFFECTIVE weapon), you either try to scare the **** out of it or play dead.

I mean, come on, it's likely in 15 minutes you'll be grizzly food anyways. Might as well have a fun time.

Outrunning a bear is generally a rather ineffective tactic. It tells the bear you are prey and the bear can run faster than you anyway. They are surprisingly fast and agile creatures, despite their bulk and seeming clumziness. Backing away from the bear slowly, as the photographer did in the OP, is a better tactic.

I should note, you only threaten the bear or play dead if it's paying attention to you. For the most part, bears don't care about us (except where they've come to see us as sources of food, either directly or where they've been given food by people). If it's not payin' you no mind, slowly back away.

NEVER come between a momma bear and her cubs. If you see bear cubs, leave the area immediately. They may be cute and playful, but a momma bear will attack anything that she feels is a threat to her cubs, including bigger bears, and bears rarely fight each other because they can get hurt.

Increase Your PM Length

Good advice. Anything smaller than a .338 magnum rifle round is light for killing grizzlies. I have seen one source critisizing playing dead with black bears. It seems they are more scavengers than grizzlies, and are more likely to try to eat you immediately. Also, I have heard of bear spray failing. That is rare, and I suspect it comes from cases of when the bear is already enraged. Grizzlies have on of the largest adrenal glands of any land animal, and are highly dangerous once enraged and have been known to take over a dozen .30 (7.65 mm) rifle hits and still kill three poeple. You might say that its a bodaciously bad idea to get a grizzley bear really pissed at you. Then again, you might not say that if you ever do succeed in achieving that temporary state.

There are wild bears in Arkansas. The Game and Fish Commission has been building their numbers since the early 40's. There are sightings up in the Ozarks. Numbers are still small but increasing along with a lot of complaints.
