Snoop and I were talking about this on MSN tonight (yes McM I finally joined the dark side and have MSN ).

It's our feeling that this will be a very war-torn game with it being a small map and six nations (hopefully reduced by one green one here soon. ). Plus, the commerce benefits of Republic aren't enough to outweigh the unit support and war liabilities when you consider that we won't have a huge swath of land to settle even when DR is gone. So that means the republic is likely out.

So the choice comes down to monarchy and feudalism. Feudalism is of course a necessary tech and the one we likely want to shoot for out of the gates in the middle ages, whereas monarchy would be a tech we'd have to research instead of a necessary and important tech like feudalism (or find someone that is researching it and trade with them)

It's our feeling that feudalism is potentially the better government in this case because of our lack of good growth potential (i.e. two whole food bonus tiles in the entire area). And because it has great unit support for the wars we know will come.

But I'd like to hear the opinions of the rest of you first.
