Many consider their "misdeeds" (suspension of habeas corpus on Lincoln's part, the New Deal on FDR's part) to be evils. I'm inclined to think they were the wrong things done for noble reasons, but doing something bad for a good reason doesn't necessarily make it good. Still, sometimes you have to break the rules and just accept the consequences.

Taxes are a necessary evil, and govt should not be too big or too small.
We should follow federalism, and allow individual states to decide on gay marriage - we should probably change in this area, but should do so slowly, so the culture can adjust.
I dont follow the drug debates real closely.
Some gun control is just common sense - extreme gun control is probably not justified, based on current studies.
Its pointless for me to discuss God with people who dont have the foggiest idea of the different concepts of God that have been important in Judaism, both historically and recently.
Its too early to determine how good a president FDR was. Discussions of Lincoln are apt to attract cranks. Revisionism on Jefferson has gone too far, I think.

The day that libertarians realize that taxes are just the most efficient way that we pay for stuff we need, is the day that Libertarianism has a chance of being a realistic political platform.

Most of us have enough decency to recognize the perversity and evilness of what Nazi Germany was. We do not praise the legacy of Hitler for defending the sovreignty and the rights of Germany because of the inhumane crimes he committed.

Same goes with the Confederacy at a much lesser degree but unfortunately, some otherwise-intelligent people still believe in the Lost Cause myth. They believe that the Confederacy represented the principles on which United States was founded.

Generally, historians strongly disagree with this popular culture conception of the Lost Cause myth. The reason is that it can be demonstrated through arguments backed by primary sources, that the Founding Fathers believed in the equality of all men (all men are created equal). However, the Founding Fathers did not have the power or capability to abolish slavery at the time and they never saw slavery as a positive good. They saw it as a necessary evil that they hope at some point of time, that it could be abolished.

From the 1840s up to the end of the Civil War, a growing number of white Southerners began to assert that slavery was a positive good -- not a necessary evil. They also ignored the premise "all men are created equal" that was asserted by slaveholders such as Thomas Jefferson. Southern seccesionists were the antithetical to the idea and principle of human equality and liberty.

Abraham Lincoln knew what he was talking about, when he asserted in the 1850s that black people had as much of a right to eat the bread that they earn with their own hands as any white person ought to have that right. He knew that slaveholders during the late Enlightenment, such as Thomas Jefferson, did not see slavery as a positive good. However, Abraham Lincoln was also a masterful politician -- he had to argue for basic, human rights rather than equal political rights when speaking to audiences in the North in the 1850s. Most of his listeners in the North could not seriously protest that blacks were entitled to the same basic human right of eating what they earn even if they would protest enfranchising blacks in terms of political equality.

There are two fundamental distortions that go with the Lost Cause myth. One, that it was impossible for white Americans in the antebellum years to see blacks as human beings -- Lost Cause advocates depreciate the human capacity for justice and fairness. Second, Lost Cause advocates distort history by ignoring not only what caused the Civil War, but also by claiming that the Confederacy represented a cause for liberty when in fact, it was the opposite -- they were for the cause of racial despotism.

Usually people like to have attention -- whether they want to admit it or not.

But yeah, there does come to a point when a person could become narcisistic or self-centered. In this case, I would say "I'm back" threads are not excessive -- or not narcisistic.

It's just part of human nature to want to be acknowledged -- homo sapiens sapiens are social creatures, after all.
