	US not safer after Iraq war, poll says Full PM-box? Change here!

For the first time since its launch in March 2003, a majority of Americans feel the Iraq war has not made the United States a safer place to live, according to a poll.


A Washington Post-ABC News poll showed that out of 1002 adults who took part in the telephone survey, 52% said the US-led war did not contribute to the long-term security of their country, which was a chief premise on which US President George Bush justified the invasion of Iraq.

I don't think the poll specifically asked which party they trust most for defense, but it did state:

"On balance, Americans now slightly favor the Democrats over the Republicans, by 46 percent-41 percent, in trust to deal with the country's problems, the first Democratic advantage in this question, however slight, in ABC/Post polls since 9/11."

All these wars and fighting abroad is just to avoid looking at the US inner security problems.
The government wants to make everyone believe that terrorists are the real threat and nuclear bombs and what not, however as of now, the biggest threat to an american is another american.

I have three views:

(1) Short term -- We're safer because the terrorists, who would otherwise have been targetting the U.S., have been heading for Iraq.

(2) Medium term -- We're less safe because our intervention into Iraq has resulted in the recruitment of a lot more terrorists. After the current Iraqi conflict is over, they'll have to go somewhere.

(3) Long-term -- Uncertain. If the Baghdad government is seen as a U.S. puppet, then the Iraqi situtation will continue to work as a seed crystal, precipitating terrorists out of the general population and loosing a reign of bloodshead.

But if the Baghdad government is seen as being truly democratic and an engine for liberty, then the momentum will turn away from terrorism and towards the democratisation of the Arab states. In this case, the world will be a lot more safe and a lot more properous.
