Naval Improvements? Increase the size of your Attachments

I am not expecting floating cities in this game a la SMAC, since that would not really be in the realm covered by this game, however I do think there should be some room for some Civ IV equivalent of kelp farms and sea mining. Perhaps instead of the harbor improvement automatically increasing resources harvested from the sea, the harbor enables you to direct sea improvements from within the city screen? That eliminates the need for a seagoing worker and accomplishes the same tasks.

At least some form of harvesting resources from sea tiles is known to be in .

That's sort of what I had in mind, actually. I like.

The question remains then of how one actually conducts improvements at sea? It would be pretty silly to have a sea worker with such a limited amount of improvements to have them do. I could also see fishermen being a special unit a la SMAC's supply crawlers.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

We don't know that yet, although one of the E3 videos showed that there's a unit called Work Boat. Besides, if we have seen those two sea improvements, that doesn't mean there are more.

The good part is that navies will then be useful to pillage enemy resources at sea . The presence of sea-based improvements in CtP was also quite a factor in making navies important.

In CtP, I always thought the enemy ships pillaging my trade routes was kind of neat.

If it enhances navy, I'm all for it. I like building navies in Civ, so naturally I play a lot of arch maps.

I've never heard of anyone doing sea mining. In fact, the only exploitation of undersea resources I can think of is the use of oil platforms.

There's salt but that may actually be considered harvesting.

They do that with coastal installations, though, don't they?

Off Cornwall and the north east of England you can go out under the sea into mine tunnels-

Lastly, 'sea-coal' has also been used for those reserves of the mineral under the North Sea that pits like Easington, Dawdon and Wearmouth accessed - until so recently....

Rinsey mine, Cornwall - There are three engine houses on the coast of Mount's Bay, between Porthleven and Praa Sands. Wheal Prosper - above Rinsey Cove was built in 1860, though the mine was worked earlier in the century, producing an average of 860 tons per year from 1832 to 1849. It finally ceased production in 1865. Wheal Trewavas - 2 engine houses for the under sea copper mine.

It makes for a very interesting experience hearing rocks roll around on the seabed above you.

Either way, I support the expansion of this game into the realm of the sea. I never was one on navies in prior Civ games, but if navies and naval improvements are important in this game I will definitely make use of them

More random chance that strategic resources (on land) get exhausted, and must be mined then on coastal waters in the last part of the game.

I agree. Although I have heard of several instances of sea mining apart from oil platforms, none are significant enough in scale to appear in the game. Offshore oil platforms are another matter though - they would be a nice if unnecessary addition. Sea 'farms' could also potentially be in the game they already are quite important.

Of course, in the future this is likely to change as exploitation of sea resources is likely to increase dramatically, but CivIV does not deal with the future...

Worked tiles are animated, 'terraformed' tiles just have the graphic displayed.
