Spaced, why do you want to have a huge family if you spend all your time not seeing them? By having a huge family while not spending time at home, you'd be effectively turning your wife into a slave of family matters.

Besides, you're saying there'd be "more of you", but if you aren't going to walk the walk (that is, spending time and care to educate and develop your children), your children will end up being unraised losers that share your genetic code.

A child is the best shot you have to make a lasting impact on this world. Don't waste this chance by making an half-assedwork (actually, a nonexistent work) of raising your children.

I'll have time to see them. The kind of job I'll have as a doctor is a 9-5 5days a week type job.
I would do everything I could to spend every minute with my kids, and wife.

It isn't a mere obstacle. It is a choice in life. You can't have everything in life, simply because time is so damn short. Just like you can't hope to learn everything there is to learn during your lifetime, you can't set yourself to obtain all the material goals there is to obtain in your lifetime.

In partiuclar, children need time. Much of time. No matter how rich or how poor you are, if you don't spend time with your children, they're very likely to grow up having serious issues.

If you intend to have many children, you should look for jobs where you can make good money while working for not so much time.

Actually, you can get paid big bucks with little time spent at work if you produce something of value. Extremely long hours are only required for dishwashers, workaholics, and executives. Anybody else can make comfortable money while still having some time to devote to the family.

On the population issue, if the question is how a game should handle it, the death rate is more important for the most part than the birth rate. Population should be growing constantly, but before sanitation and industriazation of agriculture, frequent crop failures and disease keep growth steady and slow. Then the deathrate drops, and population explodes. Then, as affluence grows and women become more educated, they chose to have less kids, and the fertility rate drops, eventually slowing non-immigration driven growth.

As for Ben's idea. The WOMAN decides on the number of kids, unless you are seeking an indentured wife.

Lets say you begin at 18 to impregnate the wife. It takes 9 months for the first kid to come, and if she breastfeeds, her own body makes it much more difficult to get pregnant again because it would make little biological sensefor a being that spends 9 months pregnant and must devote years to its offspring to keep having them (if you have two young babies at the same time, you sort of run out of hands...

Add to this that the more kids you have, the more likely a problem is- having a miscarriage, including one that may irreprably damage your ability to have more kids.

One of my uncles (religious conservative ala Ben) tried to have 7 kids. He got five, then the wife had two miscarriages, and there it ended.

Where did I say that the woman had no say? If the wife is willing to have that many kids, then it may work. It sure isn't going to work without a willing wife.

Secondly, trying for 7 kids and having 5 sure beats the heck out of trying for two and getting two.
