	Mozilla ate my bookmarks! Put an end to popups!

A little cautionary tale for y'all.

I have been a content Mozilla Firefox user...until now. I started up my browser and lo and behold, all of my bookmarks were missing.

Luckily the majority of them were imported from Internet Explorer, but all of my new ones are gone. Countless hours of browsing for cool new sites are now lost.

So I go to the Mozilla site and check the FAQ's:

21. Help, my bookmarks are all gone!

In the very unfortunate event that your bookmarks are lost, you will not be able to restore them unless you have backup. You may try to reclaim some of them from your browsing history; open the History window (go menu, history), right click (option click on Mac OS) on the Web address you want to bookmark, and choose Bookmark this Link.

This is completely bogus. I have never seen a browser just up and blow out my bookmarks before. Oh freaking well.

I tried system restore. I tried restoring my registry, but they are simply gone. I guess NOW I know I have to back up my bookmarks regularly.

I've lost them before but you can get them back. It's been awhile so I've totally forgotten what I did to get them back. Just hang tight and someone will come along with the solution.

That's why I always put my bookmarks in a html page that I use as my opening page for all the browsers I use (Opera, Firefox and IE). It is a little extra work but so I'm sure I won't lose them and that my bookmarks are the same across the three browsers.

I've had that happen to me. But only once.

There is also an extension which saves your bookmarks in case something happens to them. It backs up your bookmarks every time you close your browser.

Your bookmarks are stored in a file called bookmarks.html in your profile folder. There's also a backup file of that called bookmarks.bak...

Thanks for replies, but they are gone. I had found the html backup file and it was blank. I didn't know about the bookmarks.bak file, so I just checked, but they weren't in there any longer.

What really stinks is I just turned off Norton Protection on my recycle bin as it seems I never used it and it was simply taking up resources. Shame on me.

The html file is not a backup, it's the primary place your bookmarks are stored.

What's the problem ? You have them on your backup, so you just have to restore them.

It's happened to me twice, though I recovered them once. Occassionally, for some reason, FF loses the profile and tries to create a new one. If you ignore it and don't make a new profile, you can save your bookmarks.

Wow, that is really sad. Girls fcking themself with a carrot is pretty rare so I understand your loss - except for one thing - why the hell didn't you download it ????

I didn't manually delete it. It just that norton can sometimes find older versions of the files.

This is a rather well known fault. This Bookmark Backup extension should help.

Go into your profile and make a copy of the bookmarks.html file. Your profile should be in Documents and Settings > your account name > Application Data > Mozilla > Firefox > Profiles

If you didn't create any new account it would be the one that's something.default.

Opening up my bookmark list this afternoon was like watching a library burn to the ground. Hundreds of bookmarks... like so many flecks of ash... gone.
